Once upon a time, people stayed with an honest employer for decades or more and the reciprocating factor was the employers treated their staff like family by paying bonuses and having good dental and extended bennies. The unions were strong and manufacturing was all done within your country, or at least within the commonwealth or USA.

Worldwide poverty was about 50% when most of us were born - and now it's a little under 10%. So yeah, the gadgets, the clothes, the furniture, etc etc are cheaper and shittier than ever. And it's our own damn fault when we buy into it. Life is still pretty good, and I'm sure you, Cuz, have a decent life that doesn't rely on the outside world much - so is it just paranoia?
