We're All Doomed!™ (the Conquest, War, Famine, and Death Thread)

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

I think very few protesters support Hamas.

It is more that even though most people recognise that the murder of nearly 1200 Israelis on Oct 7th and the abduction of hundreds of hostages was an abhorrent and despicable act, the Israeli response has now killed more than 40,000 Palestinians, men women and children, the vast majority of them innocent civilians.

Two wrongs do not make a right.

There are clearly some protesters that would like to eradicate Israel, but most of them just want a cease fire and a stop to the slaughter of innocent children. As supported by eg the UN, the US, the EU and the Pope.

This is a bit like Charlottesville in reverse - there are terrible people on both sides.
And unfortunately they make life unbearable for all those that just want to live in peace.

You can replace “Hamas” with any “cause”. Plenty of protestors don’t know what it is they are up in arms about, they are along for the ride.

I was speaking with a RCMP member a while back and he was telling me that he pulled some duty on the CGL pipeline protests. A fair number of the protestors that were “active enough” to warrant being taken into custody for ID and questioning were sporting nice handfuls of crisp $100 bills. One of the women they had apprehended was American and acting more raw in her displeasure and impatience than the others and when they pushed her a bit she told them she was in a hurry to get to a flight because she had another protest to be at a couple days later…..she was a “professional protestor/demonstrator”. Plenty of American Big Oil pay people to come to Canada to protest our like and gas projects because Canada could develop into a powerhouse in that resource sector…..the financial impact of that to American companies would be huge. So they pay these people to make a bunch of noise knowing that our idiot citizenship will either go along for the ride or simply apologize for our carbon sin and let the squeaky minority have their way.

Soros’ Tides Foundation was all over a Shell mega project between Dease Lake and Iskut back in 2007(ish), and successfully convinced the locals how bad it was so Shell, despite having crown approval, didn’t want the bad optics and would not proceed without the “social license”.

Tides is also (allegedly) funding some of these pro-Palestine demonstrations as well.

Unfortunately so many of our fellow citizens have their heads in the sand and don’t actually see the big picture.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

Northern Italy? Arguably, if you include Liguria in that.

Mostly been on the west coast of Italy though. If you want to define it by regions; Liguria, Tuscany, Lazio, Campania, Sicily and Sardinia.
Not counting Calabria, because I only passed through it on a night train on my way to Sicily as a 17 year old with an InterRail ticket.

The closest to Friuli I've been is probably Bolzano, but I was only changing trains there, heading to Austria, so it doesn't really count.
But one of my daughters went on a high school exchange to Trieste, staying two weeks in an Italian family, and then their daughter stayed two weeks with us.

My favourite spots in Italy are probably the tiny island of Lipari, one of the Aeolian islands just north of Sicily, and Portofino in Liguria, albeit the latter is an extremely expensive place to be. My first time in Lipari we had dinner one night at a restaurant near the harbour, Filippino. The food was to die for. We started out with spaghetti alle vongole and then had lobster. Can't remember what we had for dessert. Great food, great service, and then a complimentary glass of the local malvasia when the bill came. I was not surprised to see when I checked a few years ago if the restaurant was still around that they had been recognised by Guide Michelin. Wonderful place!

Portofino has become a place where the jet set hangs out, which makes it a bit too pricey, but such a fantastic place. The beauty of it is surreal.

Yeah I figured you been to Italy, Per. Super cool. I’ve never been but making plans. Our family is from Udine (Friuli) region. We (great grandfather) immigrated to Vancouver from their in 1905. We are actually Venetian’s originally, from Venice but our faction migrated out to Udine in the mid 1800’s. My bro was just there a few months back and is in the process of getting his Italian citizenship, we can get our citizenship because of our great grandfather, I’ll be doing the same. It’s a bit of a shit show process now cause Canada’s banning of China, all G7 countries get the same banning because of, apparently you just can’t ban one country. Anyhow, bro had to pay a lawyer $800 to get through the channels. He’s looking at buying property in Udine, it’s fucking cheap compared to Vancouver, he’s planning on splitting his time there and in Whistler, selling his Vancouver home. I’m now considering doing the same, when I retire. I’ve had some experiences with ER the last two weeks and have come to the conclusion that Vancouver is over, it’s fucked, no turning back, all kinds of problems and growing. It won’t better, only worse. Making plans to get out of dodge to the point of leaving Canada all together. My cousin built a home in Mexico and is applying for citizenship, he plans on living there full time but bought a condo in the interior to come back every 3 months of the year. His wife is high up in Pharmacy and has educated me on how fucked Canada’s healthcare is, saying Mexico’s is better, that was surprising…maybe not. Anyhow, now strongly considering making my way back to Europe.

Sounds like a great plan there, Chef - Italy is beautiful. Once there you wouldn't run out of things to do and visit. Go for it! You haven't got many good years left. ;)

Yeah, my brother is leading the charge. He’s done here as well. Didn’t know we could actually become criticizens because of our great grandparents being from there. Bro has be showing me the homes you can get in Udine that would cost triple here in Vancouver. Udine is a really cool city as well, up north near the Dolomites. One of the reasons my ancestors chose Vancouver was its similarities to where they were from. Anyhow, I’ll probably do the same. Split my time, buy a condo here to come back to in the summertime. Bro has met a bunch of distant cousins who still live in the area.

Health care in Mexico is very good. Buy insurance and you are covered for what you pay for. Hospitals and Dr.'s are equivalent or better than here.

Belizeans who can afford it, go to Merida Mexico or Guat City for health care and it isn't that expensive.

Yeah my cousins wife is a big shot in BC’s pharmacy world. I was surprised to hear her describe how bad our overall healthcare system is and how much better it is in Mexico where they will be living full time. We’ve been led to believe otherwise.

It’s tough for the young Italians to get good jobs, because everything is seniority based, so a lot of them head out and work elsewhere in the EU, which means there are a lot of places in Italy where real estate is quite cheap. You can probably get a really goid deal, and I’m sure life is a lot cheaper in Italy. And it’s really nice, if you can accept that things often aren't on time or functioning the way they should. There is so much to see and do, and the food is amazing. Look, last summer as we were heading to Rome, we made a stop at a gas station. They had a special on red wine and they also sold parmesan cheese that had been aged for 36 months! At a fucking gas station!

And if you stroll into the alleys of the not so good parts of Napoli, where pretty much every building has a painting of Maradona, and you sit down at any random pizzeria, they’ll serve you the best pizza you have ever had in your whole life. And I’m not kidding.

Yeah, you definitely should go.

A friend and her dad just went down to Mexico for dental work (implants, etc) - flying, driving etc was still cheaper than even the local dental college - and they got great service.

An acquaintance got some dental work done in Mexico. The reception area was clean and professional but the dentistry was suspect at best and he exited the building into the alleyway in agony and with a handful of painkillers given to him.

That was a while back tho plus he's a hippie who couldn't afford anything so went for the cheapest deal lol.
