What are you looking to get in return?
As it stands right now we still need an elite 1st line wing if we want to be true contenders, and a 2nd line wing. Is Boeser gonna return 2 top 6 forwards for his same cap hit?

So how does everyone rate Canuck management performance today? Overall they appear to have done a pretty good job, maybe only the length of Jake’s contract is to worry about?

Prepared, efficient, proficient and decisive

I would not argue with DeBrusks term.

I would debate Desharnais and the need for Joshua at 3.25 if we're signing Heinen and Sherwood.

Seems Dakotas money could have been put to a different use.

Zadorov perhaps and locate another like the 2 above.

They did better than I expected TBH. The Debrusk contract to me isn't a bad contract. Its right where it should be for his average points and defensive play. Plus he has begun to emerge as a good PKer. Sure a 5-6 year deal would have been nice but we don't get him without 7 years. Both Calgary and Edmonton kicked the tires as it was known he wanted to be closer to home and come to the West. But neither team offered 7 years. So the price we pay to get him. He is moveable after his NMC is done and by then the Cap should be at 1 billion per year. So I don't think it is a bad contract at all.

Getting two big guys on D, one lefty and one righty, was impressive. Neither may bring what Big Z did overall but combined they provide depth, defensive experience, PK ability, shutdown roles. So good signings.

Sherwood I love that signing. So does Quinn  Heinen I don't know much about but he brings speed, defensive play, pk experience and a desire to come home.

Patera, what's not to like at $775,000 per year? Allows us to have completion at camp. It allows us to park Silovs in Abbotsford for one more year, maybe. If Silovs makes the team then we have a very good experienced AHLer backing up the 2 kids.

I liked that we didn't blow 7-9 million on one player on a long term 7 year deal. I liked that we used the money wisely to fill several holes. I liked how we have bought time for development of the younger players like Lekemakki, Willander, DPetty, and perhaps to some extent Silovs. I like how we are mindful of the OEL jump the next two years and kept contracts reasonable.

Allvin did say the one thing he would like to do is to not be playing in LTIR. He talked about how it makes it tough to make deals with that hanging over the team and more importantly how it hampers the team from calling up young kids to give them a taste. My take is that he is still very active in looking for ways to dump the Poolman contract. I mean seriously if he could dump that contract plus lose one of, Aman, PDG, Friedman or Podkolzin then we have 3M+ of cap space.

He also said if a deal presents itself that makes sense they will look at it so you know they would still like to upgrade, especially on D, but the deals to make sense on so many levels.

And next year just got easier with respect to UFAs. Up front, Boeser, PDG and Suter are UFA, Hoglander RFA. On the back end, Forbort, Juulsen and Friedman are UFA, no RFAs. Goalies set. So next year we should have more cap space anf fewer FA to worry about. Allvin has bought development time.

As an actual top 6 scoring winger, Jake is a better option than the Mikheyevs, Beauvilliers, Hoglanders, Podkolzins, Laffertys, Suters or anyone else we've already tried... and I'm sure he's better defensively than the guy Tocchet hated.

I also didn't love Joshua's big raise but it never hurts to have more big doods who can play.

Overall I liked the moves but like you I question a few of them if others were available. Hopefully there's still room for tweaks before the season starts.

Hockey Widow wrote: Mon Jul 01, 2024 3:20 pm So Cap Friendly has us at $535,000 over the cap but with 14 forwards and 8 Dmen. 2 goalies. So someone will need to be moved/waived. Candidates, Aman, PDG, Friedman. We just need to waive one of them before the season starts then place Poolman on LTIR. With the current roster we can carry a full compliment of 23. So someone still needs to be off the roster. That one move would give us about $300,000 in cap space plus the Poolman LTIR if we need it.

Still the chance of a minor trade. Would love to move the Poolman contract. Be good if we could move it without adding to much. If we could move Poolman along with say Aman that would give us just under 3M in cap. But unless there is someone who we covet right now I guess we are in no hurry. The Poolman cap hindered our ability at the TDD so I'd love to see us get out from under that to give us a little breathing room.
I wouldn’t go by Capfriendly as they also have Tolopilo on the roster which obviously won’t happen. As you said somebody has to come off if they add. By my calculations you could add almost a $4 million player if you’re removing a minimum salary and of course more if you remove a higher paid player.

Desharnais will be better here in the Van system where it’s very specific on reads for Dmen. Edmonton’s system seems to be watch McDavid and Draisaitl carry the puck up and react to what happens - they don’t really stay in a spot. It’s quite a bit different and big dmen will do better here.

Good time to wait and see what happens next. My guess is we’ll see at least one more player added before the season starts.
They show Tolopilo as a non roster so Abbotsford. Silovs isn't yet listed as he is unsigned. Here is who they list:

Forwards:

Pettersson
Miller
Boeser
Debrusk
Joshua
Garland
Heinen
Blugeger
Hoglander
Podkolzin
Suter
Sherwood
Aman
PDG

Defence:

Hughes
Hronek
Soucy
Myers
Friedman
Juulsen
Desharnais
Forbort

Goalies:

Demko
Patera

So that is a roster of 24 players, one over the limit. With these players we are $535K over the cap. So obviously you get compliant by dropping one of those guys. That should leave us with just over $300K of cap space plus the Poolman 2.5 M if we need it. There are some bottom six players we could move out to make a little more space and if in doing so we could move Poolman I'd be all for it. That would get us to the 3.5-4.5 of cap space depending upon who we moved, how many. Enough to add another top 9 player.
Yep that looks correct though it’s a 24 man roster as you said which is 1 over the max permitted. Most teams go with 22 so could be as much as $4.5 million. Remove a guy making more than the min (Podkolzin, Hoglander, etc) and it’s a bit higher still.

I think they keep the Poolman contract for now just in case they need the extra space. It doesn’t hurt you at all to have him on LTIR if you’re under the cap, and if you need to add in-season it gives more flexibility.

Still likely need another top 4 D at some point but otherwise it’s a solid team with few holes. Just need the key guys - especially Demko - to stay healthy this year and let’s see what happens.

What is this fucking obsession some people have with dealing Boeser?!?

We have ONE top line winger on our team.....shipping him out is not going to bring back more.

He's also very much a team first, organization, community, person. Loved in the room.

But yeah. Let's move him quick.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

I like the Dakota deal as it’s a good deal if he gets 15 goals next year. If he gets 20+ then it’s looking great. Guys his size who hit a ton, play PK, fight, are solid both ways and can play up and down the lineup usually get more than he did so I’m happy with it. Foegele, Bertuzzi, Yakov Trenin - all are less versatile than Dakota and got more on the market. I’m ok with his deal.

DeBrusk is a year too long but that’s not a big issue.

Size on D seems to be what they covet and they definitely got that.

I’m happy with the day overall - no big overpays, only one long term deal and when compared to some of the crappy contracts signed it’s a good day for the Canucks.
