Re: Only 99 days
Gotta say that I'm not sure if I'm more relieved than happy with the outcome...
Running a campaign full of "will do's" with few "have done's" after governing for so long is another way of saying its time for a change...
Coalition Governments around the world have proven they can be an effective way to govern, so the notion that a slim majority can't work was another reason for change ...

Now, does the NDP follow through with their campaign-time threats of taking this to the courts after the Conservatives won?

Be a bad move when they've just been slaughtered.
But.
They are good at that bad move thing.
The NDP would be best served to lick their wounds, shut the fuck up and reorganize.

Times are changing. BC gets a conservative government and Alberta seems to be heading for an NDP government. The NDP is up about 4 points on the UPC at the moment. Things could change after the UPC November Convention, if they decide to turn on Danielle Smith.

I don't follow provincial politics much, so took a look at this. This doesn't appear to be an option for the NDP, as any challenge to Doerkson's leadership could only come from the party's own members. The NDP would not have standing to bring a suit. And even if they could, it would only change the Conservative leadership and not the election results. And then Conservatives would obviously just hold a leadership convention and elect Doerkson as leader.
Anyways, why would you cheer on the NDP making a bad move? Democracy works best when there are two competent, reasonable, well-supported parties keeping each other in check, rather than parties on each end of an extreme. We saw how free the NDP were with their spending when there wasn't a legit opposition threat. Apart from fiscal policy I lean slightly left, so I'm not disappointed that Eby was made accountable for his decisions.

Apparently they cannot elect Doerkson as leader. The article I read that reported Eby's NDP as saying they will use every legal means to fight a Conservative win also mentioned that the Conservative Party rules state that an interim leader must be someone who will NOT run for the official party leadership.....it also stated that there is no law or policy in government that states that the Premier has to be a party leader. Doerkson could remain Premier but not the leader of the Conservative party or something.5thhorseman wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2026 12:42 pmI don't follow provincial politics much, so took a look at this. It's all convoluted.
I agree, there's no legal challenge that the NDP could bring, but attempting to do so would probably harm their reputation and further alienate the electorate.

Re: Only 99 days
Has there ever been a situation where a candidate who loses their race sues the leader of their party for incompetence or bad judgement?
Elected members budget their family finances and make financial decisions based on the term they have been elected for, and when say an Eby decides against all logical wisdom to call a snap election with 2 years left on his term it can have negative consequences for some who end up losing their seat...
Wasn't a fan of Eby before the election was called, grew to dispise him during the election, and after reading this substack inside look at him and the decison, can only imagine what those NDP'rs who lost their seat are thinking...

If I were a judge (or juror) and that scenario unfolded into an actual court case, I suspect my response to an plaintiffs would be: You were elected to govern and cast a vote that represented ALL of the people in your electoral riding. When you cast your vote in the Legislature you chose party politics over the people. Had you chosen the people, then the people would have re-elected you. If you are suffering personal financial strain because of your sudden loss of employment then perhaps in the future you will have greater empathy for the people who you have taxed into oblivion and prevented from finding jobs by chasing away investment in this province that would generate employment and revenue.rikster wrote: ↑Wed Nov 04, 2026 7:56 am Has there ever been a situation where a candidate who loses their race sues the leader of their party for incompetence or bad judgement?

Gotta give the BC Conservatives credit...they saw a disaster in Findley and her strong arm tactics and did something about it and are now running the Province...Mëds wrote: ↑Wed Nov 04, 2026 9:03 amIf I were a judge (or juror) and that scenario unfolded into an actual court case, I suspect my response to an plaintiffs would be: You were elected to govern and cast a vote that represented ALL of the people in your electoral riding. Neither the Federal Conservatives or the Republican Party in the US had the balls to change course on the titanic and are paying the price...

Re: Only 99 days
That's a true story if ever there was one.
Looking at the Cons platform, and the little I know of Doerkson, I'm actually quite content at this point. Their platform seems very down the middle with a slight right lean economically. Doerkson himself comes across as calm and moderate.
The link you posted a couple posts previously, regarding NDP, eby, etc.....

I'm not unhappy with the Cons either. Doerksen is reputedly a level-headed guy so we're not going to see anything crazy. With the Trump era ending hopefully both political parties will shift more to the middle.
