Prime Video to host Wednesday Night Hockey, NHL playoff games in 12-year agreement

Canucks broadcasts will be available on two different platforms for the next 12 years, as Prime Video and Sportsnet announced a new partnership to sublicense NHL national broadcast rights in Canada until 2038. Prime Video will carry the national Wednesday Night Hockey broadcasts during the regular season for the duration of the deal, and will have exclusive rights to show two first-round playoff series and one second-round series per year.

Last year, Rogers bought up the entire NHL rights package for the next 12 seasons in a deal worth $11 billion, and is free to sublicense it out to other companies. It’s the same decision-making that led to Prime’s involvement with the NHL two seasons ago when Monday Night Hockey debuted on the platform. The move comes on the heels of Rogers buying the remaining 25% of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment for $4.35 billion, shutting down several radio stations, including Sportsnet 650 Vancouver, and raising the price for their Sportsnet+ streaming service despite adding zero new features and now offering fewer hockey games.

Prime Video’s Monday Night Hockey presentation has been a breath of fresh air compared to Sportsnet broadcasts, showcasing new voices on the panels and in the broadcasts, improved camera quality, and new angles for pregame warm-up coverage. This season they’ll move the program from Mondays to Wednesdays, and it will also mark the first time in NHL history that Stanley Cup playoff games will be exclusive to a streaming platform.

Last season, the Canucks appeared on Monday Night Hockey four times, twice at home against St. Louis and Ottawa, and twice on the road in Montreal and Philadelphia.

How many times the Canucks will appear on the program will vary year to year, but we can glean some ideas from their 2026-27 schedule. The Canucks will play just eight of their 84 games this season on Wednesdays, one of their least busy days of the week.

Having a wider variety of options for Canucks broadcasts is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it helps break up the monotony of a long season, giving games a grander feel and heightened significance at points that need it. There’s a reason many fans consider the golden age of Canucks games on TV was when Sportsnet, TSN, and CBC each provided their own coverage. But in the cord-cutting era, additional platforms mean paying for more subscriptions, and there might even be a third coming, with Crave rumoured to be taking over the Monday night national broadcasts as well. How Canadian hockey fans would feel about paying over $400 a year to watch hockey across three separate platforms wouldn’t require a very educated guess.

I haven't been following this saga other than knowing the Canucks don't have a dedicated practice facility. But is this sort of a back to square 1 thing, or is this a continuation of a process Rutherford had at this site?

I’d like good things for Britannia, a tough area to be a kid in, and for the Canucks. This will have to be a shared amenity that improves the neighborhood while also helping the team serve its players.

Maybe not quite as many years as any governmental initiative. Frankie gets to show this as 'progress' on the file while slow-walking it till he feels the time is right.
