Interesting -- I didn't know that. Coach-athlete abuse scenario really would make this a hockey story -- though as I read Michigan's code, I think that could have been charged as second degree which involved sexual contact of those under 13 or between 13-16 when there are special circumstances, including when the defendant is in a position of authority and used that authority to coerce submission. There are more elements to prove for that crime, so even if it was coach-player, the evidence for the extra elements might not be as strong and the nature of the offense might not be so great where the state is interested in a (maximum) 15 year sentence....
