Let's trade Hughes for a #1 centre, and some high end prospects.

Jimmy Johnson - Herschel Walker + Big Haul = 3 Super BowlsJelloPuddingPop wrote: ↑Sun Oct 26, 2025 9:46 pm Let's trade Hughes for a #1 centre, and some high end prospects.
Not sure how off the cuff your comment is but there is a legit debate to be had.....

I don't think Mr Aquilini would ever trade such a marquee attraction JPP.JelloPuddingPop wrote: ↑Sun Oct 26, 2025 9:46 pm Let's trade Hughes for a #1 centre, and some high end prospects.

Woody was feeling it. Good call by Foote to put him out there.
Boeser has quietly been the glue guy on that line with Reichel and Kane. Has Kane found his feet or his heart?
Garly has been a great addition to Petey’s line in that he can do that puck retrieval and small-area work that compliments what Petey likes to do in the offensive zone.
I think Demko may have wanted the Roslovic goal back, but he was solid. Think we’ll see Willander play against the Rangers?

A "bold move" as Mr Gillis would sayMegaterio Llamas wrote: ↑Sun Oct 26, 2025 9:52 pmI don't think Mr Aquilini would ever trade such a marquee attraction JPP.JelloPuddingPop wrote: ↑Sun Oct 26, 2025 9:46 pm Let's trade Hughes for a #1 centre, and some high end prospects.

Megs, you don't think Q would quietly decide not to re-sign here if this mgmt, staff and team doesn't look like it's going to be anywhere near contention soon?Megaterio Llamas wrote: ↑Sun Oct 26, 2025 9:52 pm I don't think Mr Aquilini would ever trade such a marquee attraction JPP.
This is his prime and they may be forced into a trade if this organization doesn't pick it up.

I agree Carlito, that's exactly what I think is going on. The minions seem to be making the team worse with their every move.Carl Yagro wrote: ↑Sun Oct 26, 2025 10:15 pmMegs, you don't think Q would quietly decide not to re-sign here if this mgmt, staff and team doesn't look like it's going to be anywhere near contention soon?Megaterio Llamas wrote: ↑Sun Oct 26, 2025 9:52 pm I don't think Mr Aquilini would ever trade such a marquee attraction JPP.

I'm saying I don't think Mr Aquilini will trade a marquee ticket-selling assett no matter the circumstances. Hughes will play out his contract and walk imo.

The haul for Hughes may not be as big as everyone hopes. If Hughes wants to walk onto a contender then if he does not commit to an extension with the acquiring team they will not be as willing to unload a boatload for his services. They would be in the same position as the Canucks if there is no agreement or a sign and trade, when he is eligible to sign one. The exception to that may be a team that is already contending and they see him as the piece to get them the Cup. But any team like that is probably not going to have the assets we want.
Truly if we are contemplating trading him it would be best to wait until after July 1, 2026 and try to do a sign and trade. But he may only be willing to do that for a select few teams. So even though he is a franchise player I think the return would be disappointing. Unless we were truly doing a rebuild, which we wont do.

It was more a tongue in cheek comment, that they can still win without him.donlever wrote: ↑Sun Oct 26, 2025 9:51 pmJimmy Johnson - Herschel Walker + Big Haul = 3 Super BowlsJelloPuddingPop wrote: ↑Sun Oct 26, 2025 9:46 pm Let's trade Hughes for a #1 centre, and some high end prospects.

Certainly debate to be had though, but in the end - this team is a better team with Hughes playing at 100%. I know Van can fill a lot of holes trading him, but the caliber of player isn't going to be even close, and we don't have anyone who would fill the hole left by Hughes, and we can see the issues a lack of depth creates.
Now, if someone were to offer a top tier center, a first pairing defensemen and some other bits and bobs - then of course you make that deal. I, like HW, just don't see a team doing that.
Re: OTW-GDT: Canucks host Oilers Oct26/25 @ 7 PM PST SNP/SN1
Yeahno, I agree, it couldn't be a supplement existing deal.
It would have to be a full tank rebuild deal.
Which, as Megs and RG say, FA & friends aren't going to do.
But, fun to shoot the shit about it anyway as that's one reason why we're all here....

Yeah, I can't see a Hughes trade and also agree that the return in any trade would be underwhelming.
For the record, I am not in the 'trade Hughes' camp. He is probably the best player the Canucks have ever had, certainly the best D man. The Canucks should only entertain a trade scenario with him if he makes it clear he will not re-sign with them or he demands something like 18 - 20 mil per season in his next contract.
