He had 38 points and was + 11 playing with Dahlin on one of the best D pairings in the NHL on a shitty team with little PP time. He just turned 24, has a cup ring and a WJC where he led the D men in ice time in the final game. I'd wait a bit before anointing him a bust. Only thing I worry about is his melon.

It is interesting that both Hughes and Byram's contract expire at the same time...

Take care...

$6.25 mill per year says all that needs to be said of Byram. He ain’t worth more than that.

Bowen was drafted 7 drafts ago, how much more rope are you going to give him? lol

Bowen isn't bad. He's not a #1D some projected on draft day, but his all around play warrants top 4 utilization, and he has underutilized offensive skills. Behind Makar, behind Dahlin, Bowen hasn't had a chance to run a main power play unit. I think he has that in him, but for it to happen, he has to be moved. Imagine if he did get that utilization. Increase his points output by 15-20 points. What's the contract then?

6 drafts ago. No need to lie. He had Makar and Dahlin in front of him in both teams he played for. Thats where a guy can increase his production by 25-30 %.

2. 2024
3. 2023
4. 2022
5. 2021
6. 2020

You’re right, my bad, 6 not including the one (2025) just occurred, he’s still a kid with lots more time to develop.

Goaltender Lukas Dostal reached a five-year contract extension the deal is for $32.5 million and carries a $6.5 million average annual value.

Making Lankinen's 4.5 look a little better, although Dostal's pegged as a #1

Dostal is 25, for an all but your Carey Price-type young goaltender, that’s the age that you should just start to see him turn into a consistent starter. His NHL numbers aren’t bad, GAA is misleading as that is a reflection of both the player as well as the team in front of him. However, his .903 SV% will need to improve for him to be worthy of that contract.

As you point out, he is projected to be a #1…..Lankinen is 30. We have what we have there.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

Pegged as a #1 and Dostal is 25 years old with upside. Dostal's been around league average the last couple seasons with a terribly disheveled defense in front of him. Few goalies have it fully figured out by 25. That was Demko's age when he signed his last deal (his was 5 years/$5M AAV), and I think that's more of the comparison. The difference in salary between the two contracts is minimal given Demko signed in the flat cap era (and known to be flat cap for some time -- a shade over 6% of total cap) and Dostal signs in a rapidly rising cap era (6.8% today, but will be below Demko's last contract's cap hit by year 3 if cap projections hold).

Dostal has more games under his belt, but Demko showed slightly better though had never carried the workload Dostal has; both were similarly widely regarded good young goalie bets.

[EDIT: Just saw Mëds' post. Basically same....]

You have to wonder why dudes are signing KHL contracts these days. I would think that's taking an unnecessary risk just to make a little extra bumpflap cake

You might get smoked by a Ukrainian drone strike or get drafted into the red army
