The Lankinen Question - Re-Sign...or...?

Post by Cornuck »

Just read a post on Canucks Army (LINK) that lists some of the stats over Lankinen's career and how they add to to league averages, etc.

With Demko starting to appear as damaged goods, and just one more year left (at $5m) - the team needs to decide soon who will be minding the net for the next few years.

Demko still has some good games left in him - but with the injuries, we will always need a plan A2 with him. A Sivlos solution won't be the answer.

I'd love to see Demko come back and regain the true #1 spot and lead us through a long playoffs - but I wouldn't bet the farm on that happening.

So the question is - do we stick with Demko? Re-up him when his contract is done? Do we sign Lankinen for a few years? How much/ how long? Do we find another goalie?

For a backup, do we stick with the farm?

honestly, I would not go higher than 2.5 mil per. Would try to re-sign him for something like 3 years.

Sign Lankinen long term, and sign a high quality backup along side him.

You can just throw him in there and forget about the poplideus, which is something you need to be successful.

I don't think that you make that decision until closer to the March trade deadline...

And with the names of Stolarz and Thompson and Dacord and Knight currently in the top 10 goalies stats how hard is it to find another Lankinen if he decides to go another route when his contract is up...

And according to some on this board, he won't resign her anyways...he will be like all of the others who want out...

Take care...

Would this mean that you don't see a qualified backup emerging from Abby any time soon?

I would offer him another 1 year contract at $2.25M with an M-NTC and tell him this is a “win the position deal. Basically give him the opportunity to take the starting job from Demko and you extend him to a multi-year deal if he pulls it off and send Thatcher packing at the 2026 TDL.

I'm all for signing Lankinen but that Dude has the cash register rolling now.

Why would he lowball himself after already doing so this past off-season?

If I'm Kevin I'm pumping up the stats and aiming at a longer deal for an enhanced scurry annual.

Not signing anything with a 2 in front of it.

Having said all that....

I'm with Megs at this point on the Demko front.

Very, very leery.

I take it to mean that Lankinen has not inspired long term confidence yet and if you’re going with him you want a proven NHL’er backing him up.

I still see some potential in Silovs and Tolopilo but neither is ready for a backup role in the NHL next year in my estimation.

My only concern that I'm extremely leery of is that the Lanky one seem to rely overly on athleticism and reflexes. Be honest, he's been good but also extremely lucky at times.

Now seemingly without Ian Clark (not I.Clarky, Todd. NO.), who's to say he doesn't join Demko on the playground slide? Who's to say he couldn't quickly become the Spencer Martin of yesteryear?

But what the fuck do I know about goaltending? Nothing. But as a casual hockey playing Dman, I can honestly say I'm a better goaltender than Alex Edler.

Who isn’t. He’s the only guy to score more goals into his own net than Loui “Air Thief” Eriksson.
