Sakic has always played hardball in negotiations.

And has always stuck to his idea of an internal cap.

Hey, maybe he'll flip Necas to us for Miller. :look:

As far as I can tell, the trade call still hasn't even happened yet, so I guess it could still fall through.

Edit:

Apparently the trade has gone through.

No 1st round pick involved is a bit of a surprise.

Only positive I can see for the Canucks here, and I am trying hard, is this could encourage other teams to get serious on Petey/JTM.

Carolina still have KK and their 1st. ;)

As a former franchise centers, guys like Sakic and Yzerman are probably perfectly suited to recognize when a guy is worth the franchise level cash and when he's not. MacKinnon is, imho, the 2nd best forward in the league right now and signed to the franchise money in Colorado. In a salary cap world, I think teams have room for 1 franchise player. You can stretch that to two provided the contracts are spaced decently enough apart and the cap is increasing.

Saw a stat showing the top 4 point scorers over the past 4 seasons.....

Connor McDavid 578
Leon Draisaitl 502
Nathan MacKinnon 479
Mikko Rantanen 431

That 48 point drop from Nate to Rantanen is noteworthy, so is the 76 point drop from McDavid to Draisaitl.

I suspect that if Sakic or Yzerman were GM in Edmonton, Draisaitl would have been dealt instead of extended to $14M x 8. Interestingly enough Rantanen is represented by the same agency as Draisaitl.....so the ask was likely to be in the $13M range.

With Makar due for a monstrous raise next year, it's a smart move by Sakic to salvage this situation and buy himself 18 months of replacement play in Necas. I won't be surprised to see Necas and Rantanen swap scoring paces now that the former is going to be playing with MacKinnon and the latter is heading to that bunch of jerks where Brind'Amour demands 200 feet of hockey that starts in the defensive zone. Note that Rantanen averages 1 second of SH/TOI per game.....he's not renowned for being ultra aware defensively.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

wtf happened to Cozens? He’s dog shit stink these days

https://thehockeynews.com/news/as-cozen ... his-moment

Buffalo wouldn’t do it but give me Kulich over Cozens in a return package. The kid is a beast (6’-1” - 190 lbs). His ceiling is much higher than Cozens

“For him (Kulich) to answer the way he did tonight, for a young centerman, was pretty impressive,” said Ruff after the game.

“He (Kulich) isn't afraid to go to the net and work hard,” Peterka said. “That's why it's so fun to play with him.”

That's a canuck-like rate of failure. 2/6?

I think that’s a pretty average rate, bro. You really need to go through each draft class to see how little of an amount of prospects from each class actually become decent NHL pros, it’s shockingly low. From what I’ve concluded, draft picks after the third round is a complete waste of time. And like 1 or 2, 3 or 4 tops make out of the third round.

Cozens needs a change too. I’d love to see Petey go there for something around Cozens (he has minimal value but maybe with a change of scenery he’ll be better), Byram (still hasn’t signed so does he want to be there and do they want him?) and one of their younger centers - Kulich, Krebs (though he plays wing more), etc.

Probably best to re-visit around the draft as the Sabres will likely make some major changes. No matter how much talent they have they can’t seem to get going in the right direction.

I'd even be willing to go Cozens Byram straight across with the signing of Bowen as the caveat....

Same. Byram looked damn good to my red and veiny eyes.

Cozens grew up a Canucks fan. Whitehorse has a pretty close tie to BC and Vancouver so I can see that trade working out. Hell to get rid of the whole pouty morose bullshite I'd even retain the .6
