Just Not ready

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. Meeting today of PM, cabinet that is negotiating with Trump and all Premiers. Premiers, except Alberta's Danielle Smith attended in person. Smith is on holidays.

Everyone signed the final statement that everything is on the table with respect to counter tariffs if needed, except Smith.

Smith is adamant that Alberta's natural resources are not up for negotiation and that counter tariffs are petty and do not help anyone. She laid out her position very well the other day. The Feds and other Provinces did their damnedest to limit Alberta's export options.

They chased away private ownership of Trans Mountain and in the case of BC, did everything possible to shut it down.
They shut down Northern Gateway
They shut down Energy East.
They shut the door on natural gas trade to Germany, Italy, Japan ...

The result was Alberta went on their own to further develop pipline links to the only other option, the US. Now the Feds and other Provinces want to close that avenue.

This is, "Let Those Eastern Bastards Freeze in the Dark" all over again.

... and Trudeau said he will not run for re election.

Danielle Smith's view is that all tariffs are bad. She doesn't agree with Trump's tariffs and she does not agree with counter tariffs or export restrictions to combat then.

Both policies only hurt consumers.

Laughably, Eby has said BC could halt export of critical minerals from Teck's smelter operations in Trail. That smelter processes ore from the Red Dog mine in Alaska. Rock put on a boat from Alaska, shipped to Washington State, the put on a train to Trail. The smelter is currently losing money and laid off nearly 40 employees just before Christmas.

The other source of material for the operation is BC's electronics recycling program.

BC used to produce a critical supply of Rhenium from the Island Copper mine at Port Hardy. It was a by product in the molybdenum and after recovery in smelters in Asia, went straight to NASA for use in the Space Shuttle hear tiles. Oakland Cooper close in the mid 90's.

Smith responds to her critics.

One commentator yesterday noted, Canada doesn't even know if or what will face tariffs, he compared it to making sausage but not knowing the main ingredient.

Poilievre and Smith correctly note the trade imbalance is primarily due to energy purchases by the US. Electricity from BC (Columbia Basin Treaty was just renewed), Ontario, Quebec and petroleum products from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland. How does the US replace that energy is they just want to make it more expensive from Canada?

Trump noted yesterday, his election was primarily based on immigration control. That will be his #1 priority.

Interestingly that it takes a foreign leader to get Canada to do something that should have been done long ago.

Depressing that our exiting leader used Trump as a punching bag for the past 4 years not imagining he'd be re-elected and Canada would have to deal with him again.

Sadder too how the Federal Government has taken advantage of resource rich Provinces and then turned them into their environmental punching bags only now to have a "Canada First" sob story.

Mark Carney declares he's in with an unfortunate logo choice.

Who is running his show?

Stretch limo, logo of a collection agency that also mimics Petro Can (of Pierre Trudeau fame). Bans accredited and invited journalists from his reveal announcement.

Bit of a Day 1 shit show for imaging.

Smith with a well needed geography lesson for the Feds when it comes to pipelines.

It is Canada, what we are known for. We do tend to surprise ourselves when it comes to mind that we are in fact a country. I just think Trump is on to us. He’s like a hawk.

Come on 5th, Trudeau has just done what every middle manager would do, he formed a committee to study the issue.

Not only that, there are so many members of the committee, they will never have quorum with their various schedules.

Top, not sure you can answer this but if you picked one of the many stalled mining and resource project in BC and say PP and somehow the NDP approved it how does the BC government gain revenue from it?

Just in taxes or are there other revenue sharing models?
