Apparently everyone is trying to hose down their house and roof at the same time and the system can't keep up. Much like a cell phone network, the system isn't designed for max concurrent usage. On top of that it's pretty useless in a firestorm and some homeowners are ending up in the hospital because they didn't put the hose down. Shoulda put the hose down. Shoulda got old.Topper wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 1:07 pm The CL-415's were already there. Quebec has an agreement with LA Fire to contract then in the Canadian fire off season. There was no sending in the cavalry for this. The stuff being sent now is rather Johnny Comes Lately.
All this discussion of the cisterns on the hills running out of water and why aren't they replenishing with sea water.
- How do you get the water volume to the cistern faster than it is being used?
- What is the total lift to pump up? How many pumping stages would you require?
- How large of a pipe would you need for the volume required?
- What would be the weight of the pipe and water in the pipe and how would you anchor it?
It may look like an obvious solution but start looking into the logistics.

Exactly, do you design the water hydrant system for fire suppression of a house fire or as a water source for a wildfire. Cost/benefit?5thhorseman wrote: ↑Fri Jan 10, 2025 2:20 pmApparently everyone is trying to hose down their house and roof at the same time and the system can't keep up. Is anyone getting on the front line, if you can find it, with 80mph winds? The fire in the Monte Lake/Vernon area a couple of years ago was moving at 8kmh with spot fires 10km out in front.
There was one body found on the fire east of LA that was still holding a hose.
Reality is, you will suffocate, lose consciousness, collapse and die before you are burned.
Few years back there was a fire south of us 10km, clear visibility, low winds, I had burning leaves and twigs dropping into my yard. An hour later, wind direction changed blowing in the smoke from fires in north central Washington and for the next four days I couldn't see the more than 20m. Furnace off, fan on and a good supply of finest micron furnace filters I could get to keep things somewhat breathable in the house. A fleet of skimmers had just arrived in Christina Lake and a dozen helicopters at the airport. All grounded for days because of visibility. Ground clews were pulled off because there was no visibility for navigating the maze of forestry roads.
200 yr flood event the following year was 13" higher than the previous (1948) record. Took out two neighbourhoods and much of downtown. Feds and Prov just poured buckets of money into buying out the two neighbourhoods to return them to natural state and allow flooding there while dyking off downtown and neighbouring areas. A massive waste as far as I'm concerned for the frequency of the event. PR benefit outweighed cost. Now the City is 80 residences fewer for it's tax base in an already small community.

James Woods reporting a friend was about to sign a $18,000/mo rental agreement on a house in LA the night the fires erupted.
Price jumps to $30,000/mo the next morning.

Re: CC Random thread
As a business owner in construction, I’ve learned that shit happens and shit is always going to happen when humans are involved. Trades have good days and they have their bad days, a detail is missed, architect missed a detail, same for the engineer, building code change, new advances in building technologies are missed, etc.
I’ve been in the racket long enough to where instead I no longer bitch about “why it happened, who can we blame, who’s at fault, blah fucking blah”. I don’t waste my fucking time on that anymore. I go right to - let’s fix the problem. There is a saying for this - putting out fires. So listening to the fucking Weibo’s, Trumps and Elon politicizing the issue - would’ve, should’ve could’ve’s, is not constructive at the moment. You deal with the situation first and figure out how to make the appropriate changes after to avoid this in the future. It’s called progress. Instead of just casting blame which is just another ugly human trait.
So all the would’ve, should’ve, could’ve cunts can fuck off. Let’s focus on “putting out the fires”
There’s a common saying in construction “we learn from our mistakes” and that goes up to the Civic level. California is gonna learn from this.
So Donald, Elon shut the fuck up and help instead of throwing gasoline on the fire ya fat cunts.

Pretty good rant there from the Dude.
Re: CC Random thread
I'm in a similar boat.
We attack shit like that from the front end.
Pre-project risk and hazard assessment documented and reviewed with field staff, pre-production project overview meeting with Account Manager, Estimator, Super, Foreman and LH to go through the A - Z's, daily job analysis both safety and productivity oriented and reviewed pre-shift, pro-active Near Miss, Incident and TB Talk program not just targeted at safety but also directed towards efficiencies and task choices.
Dude is right, shit happens.
Plan your work and work your plan is a real thing.
It works.

We can it " living in worst case scenario land".
I find all these daily tailgate/safety meetings breed monotonous complacency.
What topic do you want to use today? What topic haven't we used in a couple of weeks? Stay awake long enough to sign the form.
Young kid I was on a job with a year ago insisted on his emergency response plan for the job. It was fucking useless but it was an impressive looking bubble plot with lots of the current buzz words all in a soft comforting shade of powder blue.
Want impressed with my simple bullet point checklist attracted to a map. Learned from a Mine Inspector who came out to my site. He went to the hospital and used my emergency plan to navigate to the job. He made it, I passed.

Before Trump it would be a no brainer. Afaik he is the first and only leader of a Nato country who has suggested he would not honour article 5 which states that all Nato countries must assist a member that is attacked.BCExpat wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2025 12:13 pmWhat is NATO going to do when China or Russia start encroaching on what they consider disputed territory? Come on Chef - it isn't going to happen, at least not a full take over. However, we should be looking at a much closer relationship with the USA - more like becoming a protectorate of the USA. So we will still have our own government, health care, etc. With much closer ties to the USA and for the protection they could offer us, especially in the north, I would be all for it.

There's a difference between being attacked and having another country encroach on your territory, especially if it is uninhabited. What is the expected NATO response to that?Per wrote: ↑Sun Jan 12, 2025 1:08 amBefore Trump it would be a no brainer.
