Somewhat of an over exaggeration there Donny. I do like the dramatization.

Yeah. Chef posting actual hockey for a change is something to behold round these parts. Some real nostalgia to be felt at the corner these days.

I figure we should all make the most of it for the next month. January 20th will likely see him step off the wagon hard!

Red Wing news - Lalonde fired, McLellan hired as Sandin Pelika has a hat trick and assist in the opener of the WJC.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

McLellan should be able to nullify Sandin Pellika's offense if anyone can.

Do the Red Wings debut the 1-3-1 after the break?

Outdoor games suck donkey balls.

If you want this side show nonsense, do it for the all-star game not a game that counts in the standings.

According to LeBrun
Frank Vatrano’s 3-year, $18M extension is an interesting one. He will get paid $3M a year in base salary but then $9M in deferred salary. Starting 10 years from now in 2035, will make $900,000 a year for 10 years, and his plan is to live outside of California (and its tax system) at that point in retirement. Ducks, meanwhile, benefit with deferred payments by having $4.57M AAV (instead of $6M AAV) on the deal. Creative way for both the team and player to make it work. And perhaps show other players in future way to stick-handle around California tax issue.
Cap circumvention and tax "evasion".

That is why agents and accountants get paid.

What's his cap hit? If it's 6 million, there's no cap circumvention going on. I could care less about his bonuses or deferred money. The cap hit is the kicker for the average fan. It's a bit different from how the Dodgers are completely skewing things in MLB.

Toews last season with Chicago reminded me of Messiers stint here in Vancouver. Retirement league level effort on his part.

AAV and cap hit are the same thing.

If the league approved it, then obviously this is workable. This also sets a precedent for players to be asking for guaranteed retirement income.

I’m curious how the numbers work. He’s deferring 50% of his salary, yet the Ducks save just under 25% on the cap hit. I assume they will have to carry $900K of dead cap for a decade.

They CAN'T circumvent the fucking cap. It's a three year deal Tiger. They can pay him over 40 years, they still aren't getting that cap hit under 6 million per.

But AAV = Cap Hit.

AAV means average annual value. So take the total salary and divide it by the term. That number is then applied to the team’s salary cap.

In this case it should mean $6M per. But he’s deferring $3M per year and the Ducks will be paying him ~$900K per year for 10 years starting in 2035. At which point they will be tagged that amount on the cap. Boston did it with Chara for a season.
