I worry about the Eddie Lack flash in the pan factor with Silovs. He seems to have the same struggles Lack had handling long shots through crowds from the point. Hopefully not.Cousin Strawberry wrote: ↑Sun Sep 22, 2024 8:12 am So I gather management wasn't all that impressed with Silovs or Pantera's training camp which led to the signing of KL.
I've said it before, Silovs was merely OK in the playoffs. The filthy coil figured out his weakness (finding pucks in traffic/long shots from distance through screens) and stole that series back from defeat.
I'm more than comfortable with this new guy, he's been pretty solid in the handful of games I've seen him in

Re: Canucks News N Notes 24-25
I think it comes down to experience with Silovs. If Demko is out for an extended time, management would rather a proven back-up take the reins rather than an inexperienced Silovs still finding his footing.
Why put the season and/or the kids development in jeopardy when they can bring in a proven guy at the same cap hit?
Further, Silovs doesn’t require waivers, so being so tight to the cap allows more flexibility managing bodies. The longer Allvin can stay off LTIR, the better for cap space accumulation.
It’s the smart move.

Plus, the Poolman contract becomes a lot more tradeable at the deadline
... IF those of us speculating it is uninsured are correct.
To make a deal work, the acquiring team would only have to pay a fraction of the real dollars owed for the year.

Good update! Thanks!BoS wrote: ↑Fri Sep 20, 2024 9:52 pm Managed to make it to Pen for some of the practices today.
A few observations:
Incredible pace. Yogi was on the white board explaining the drills, 5on5’s and 2on2’s that were all continuous with minimal breaks. Tocc rolled the lines constantly shouting “Go! Go! Go!” Pace and speed was the main objective and intensity was maintained throughout.
The leaders led the way by example, but the usual suspects, Miller and Myers were doing plenty of instructing. All business all the time.
Individually, I didn’t get a great look at a lot of guys, bit tried to watch the newbies.
DeBrusk and Heinen can skate and push the pace. It looks like Heinen will be given every opportunity to play in the top six because he’s a fairly heady player that can really move. Sherwood too can fly out there and seems to have a sneaky good shot. Desharnais has decent mobility, paired with Soucy if I recall.
Raty plays with confidence and poise. Bigger than I thought and I didnt really see his mobility as an issue. Sasson too didn’t look at all out of place.
Hoglander looked really good out there. Quicker, he was moving his feet well and showing off his crazy hands.
Allrickson his BIG. A bit lumbering, but his skills are evident. Once he’s grown into his frame he could be a player, good shot. Don’t know anything about Mueller, but he displayed a wicked shot throughout practice.
Petey looked great. He undressed D-Petey early on to set up Jake for a tap-in. Sprong has decent mobility as well.
Felton can really move. Not big, but he’s confident with the puck on his stick and can really shoot it.
Test results weren’t released yet, but sounds like Miller, Hoglander and Sprong were among the top. I think Hogs was one of the standouts of the day.
And be a killer, not a hunter.
Hunting implies failure!

AS for Silovs I think the plan all along was to return him to Abbotsford. Given his waiver eligibility it made sense to try to get him more time to work on his warts. The Canucks had said at the end of the season they would look for a suitable backup and that would create camp competition but they liked the idea of getting Silovs more development time.
With Demko timeline uncertain it made even more sense to get a good backup as it is likely both he and Silovs will be the opening day starters. I'm not sure that anyone should be surprised. I like the potential of Silovs but he was exposed by Edmonton and clearly needs to work on some things. At best he is a serviceable back up but not someone would want to reply upon to carry the bulk of the work.
I like the kid but I am not yet sold that he will become decent number one. I am hopeful but not yet sold.

Re: Canucks News N Notes 24-25
Interesting analysis on Canucks Army yesterday and today about papering guys to Abbotsford to start the season. They suggest that "the Canucks could leave Demko on their opening day active roster despite his still being injured, and will use Silovs’ waiver-exempt status to ‘paper’ him down to Abbotsford. Lekkerimäki will take his spot on the opening day roster, but before Game One is played, they’ll be swapped and Demko will hit the IR."
This analysis allows them to secure the rookie bonus maximum overage in the event that they do recall Lekkerimaki at some point during the season. If he is not on the opening day roster then they need cap space to cover not only his salary but also his bonuses. By papering him on the opening day roster they would get the ability to defer bonuses until next season. Or something like that.
It is clear that even with the injuries we have we can IR guys, not LTIR them and we still have just over $90,000 cap space to accrue but with only 22, or 21 players depending upon Joshua. If Joshua is not ready to go we can IR him but if we call anyone up we would need to LTIR someone to recall a replacement, or skate with 20 guys. With a healthy Joshua we can roll with 21-22.
Or course if we have any other injuries then we are hooped and would need to start LTIR players.
