2024 Offseason - moving forward

Re: 2024 Offseason - moving forward
Big offseason coming up - should be fun to watch. I’d try and sign a few of the UFAs to below market deals and see if they accept. Myers almost certainly will, doubt Z, Dakota or Lindholm would though. That’s fine as they are all replaceable.
Sign Hronek long term at somewhere around $7 million. I wouldn’t go higher than that but he is a good fit with Quinn.
Try to trade Mikheyev even if you need to retain cash. He’s lost a step and that’s not easy to get back at 29 especially when that was your only superpower. If you can’t trade him no big deal, let’s see if he can be better next year. I don’t think it will be nearly as difficult to move money this year though with the cap going up.
Looks like there will be about $20-$21 million leftover once Myers and Silovs are re-signed. Put about $10 million into 2 wingers - preferably guys with a bit of speed, goal scoring and grit - easy to find I know! The other $10 million goes into the D. That’s either Hronek or a new RHD for Quinn, plus a guy for the 3rd pairing to play with Juulsen or another cheap guy they bring in. I like Brenden Dillon but he’s not the only one.
Whatever they do I trust Allvin, he’ll make this team better next year.

From the sounds of it Zadorov has turned down offers from Allvin and company and will be heading to market meaning some team is going to over pay for him so I have my doubts he returns. You can pretty much park Joshua and Lindholm in this category as well. From what I understand Myers has signed a new contract with the Canucks or is about to. I also believe Hronek is staying as well. With the dust settling I believe Allvin will be looking for cheaper replacements of Lindholm, Zadorov and Joshua in the open market on manageable contracts and will be promoting from within meaning the likes of Podkolzin, Raty and Lekkerimaki will be getting regular cups of coffee. The new regime needs to put an end to tying up big money on non-core players saving that for the big ticket items while the role players remain temporary on cheap, short term manageable contracts. Those less prominent players should be on a revolving door year in year year out, re-treading. Unfortunately the Zadorov’s, Joshua’s and Lindhhoms need to be churned in and out on a short term stay. Would be great to keep them but keeping them cdn hurt your cap flexibility
BTW, Boeser is a core player in Chefs cookbook.

Considering what it took to unload Dickinsons contract i think the Canucks would be better off hanging on to him and hope for a better season.Diehard1 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 01, 2024 8:01 am

Like the man said, it's not as difficult to move contracts now with the cap increasing in leaps and bounds.dangler wrote: ↑Sat Jun 01, 2024 11:23 amConsidering what it took to unload Dickinsons contract i think the Canucks would be better off hanging on to him and hope for a better season.Diehard1 wrote: ↑Sat Jun 01, 2024 8:01 am

For example, we moved Anthony Beauvillier mid-season (and even got 5th back in return!)

Yes. It will age as bad a Brock at 8x8. Just say no to both. Frigging media make it look like we have no other options. Ffs.Strangelove wrote: ↑Fri May 31, 2024 6:39 pmAs badly as Brock 'I Lost My Focus For Two Years' Boeser at $8M x 8 as the chef suggests?
BTW, both contracts would expire when the player is 36 yrs old and Wilson is a lot easier on the cap.
The Cup is soooooo ours!!!!!!!

Donny doesn’t actually need anyone jumping to his defence, so that’s not what this is…..but seriously Chef, know when to shut the fuck up. Lever’s point was already established, you didn’t need to further cement it with a case in point.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

Re: 2024 Offseason - moving forward
With the post-season injury reports out, and a better look at the teams in the 3rd round, and what level of hockey it takes to succeed there, I don't think this core is good enough, even if Allvin is able to put together a first tier supporting cast.
That is not to say that the talent isn't there, necessarily, because some of them are young enough that we can still hope for continued improvement, but we need to see peak Pettersson and peak Hughes some time before the end of peak Demko and peak Miller, and it needs to be better than what we saw this playoffs, or there just won't be enough, unless they get seriously lucky at the drafting table.
This was my fear with the way the team was built all along, and it looks to me so far like that's the way it's playing out. I acknowledge that the story on this core isn't written until Miller's play drops off with advancing age (assuming that, as the oldest, he is the first to decline), and that age-related decay is highly variable, but the window is shorter than I would have hoped.
So how does such an assessment guide the path forward? Barring some luck -- a couple of recent draft picks seriously outperform their draft projections, the Canucks come out way ahead in a big trade, a few players sign team-friendly contracts for their own reasons -- this organization doesn't have the depth of talent to make it over the top without mortgaging the future a bit. Maybe no modern organization has; I don't follow the moves that other teams make. And I suppose they have to shoot their shot, as a matter of fan expectation if nothing else. So there will be some draft picks foregone, and some contracts that probably won't age well. If they win the Grail, great ! Few of us expect an dynasty, and most wouldn't care what happened in the next few seasons as they paid the long-term cost. But I think that effort to get all the way there should have a short leash, and if they don't make it soon, rather than trying to extend a not a not very wide or long window, they should switch back to asset-recovery and rebuilding sooner rather than later.
Of course, I have seen nothing to indicate that the current ownership group would be OK with such an approach.
