I believe every bit of it, my wife is American from California, her family is all in and around L.A. I truly got an understanding of that “decaying America” within the first hour of meeting them all in their environment, the ignorance, lack of intelligence, unworldly, completely obliviousness to all things outside of “America”, inherent racism, lazy views, blah blah it was quite gross to be honest and these are your typical middle class, working class white LA suburbia types. Her family is split down the middle, the Trump whitey half are complete fucking ignorant morons, stupid as fuck and the other half - the liberal hippies were normal, intelligent and decent.

In his farewell address to the nation, President Dwight D. Eisenhower warns the American people to keep a careful eye on what he calls the “military-industrial complex” that has developed in the post-World War II years. Eisenhower began by describing the changing nature of the American defense establishment since World War II. No longer could the U.S. afford the “emergency improvisation” that characterized its preparations for war against Germany and Japan. Instead, the United States was “compelled to create a permanent armaments industry” and a huge military force. He admitted that the Cold War made clear the “imperative need for this development,” but he was gravely concerned about “the acquisition of unwarranted influence…by the military-industrial complex.” Necessary though that development might be, Eisenhower warned, this new military-industrial complex could weaken or destroy the very institutions and principles it was designed to protect

What i find strange about modern day politics is how everyone is expected to "pick a side" or whatever. There seems to be so few centralists or those of us that roll down the middle.

Yup. Common sense thinking doesn’t seem to lead the charge. Your ideology does. It’s back to Nationalism/Protectionism in a migrating world. The divide is growing and the next big war is coming, round round we go. The thing is, America’s Military Complex has bankrupted their country while Russia and China’s military and economy have gotten stronger. Those countries are admiring the fall of the American Empire. The next world war would be catastrophic for the states

I think there are a lot more centrists than most realize. The media (left/right/whatever) does not want to tell a story of level headed people who would get along. It's much easier to have red states and blue states, left vs right, and tell each side that other side is misguided, wrong or out to destroy them.

People that listen to one side continually buy in to this story and lose the ability to think for themselves. The Dude's 'nutshell' post above portrays a worst case scenario (portrayed by the left) that has been coming for decades, and is now moving faster to completion.

There are extremists on both sides, but it's gotten to the point where they are the only voices being heard. Do the do the gun-toting 'protesters' marching on state capitol buildings this past week speak for the majority? Not by a long shot, but they make for a great 'news story' - the right can rally behind them, while the left wonders why they are so angry. The centrists look at the sideshow, shrug their shoulders and hope nobody gets killed.

I've always thought a society / country should be judged on how it treats its most vulnerable citizens. Canada, for the most part, has done well over the years. The States is powered by the "American Dream"™ that implies if you work hard, you will be rewarded with success. The individual and their rights should prevail over everything else. Sounds great in theory, but we're seeing how fragile this system is after just 2 months of disruption. People down here have been fed the story of the "lazy welfare mother" so they assume that every poor person is lazy and is after their tax dollars. In the meantime, 60% of the country is poor and doesn't offer up a complaint when their tax dollars bailout mismanaged corporations.

But in the end, everything will go back to "right/left" because "rich/poor" might lead to change.
