Tanev sure looked run down at the end there. He shouldnt be playing that many minutes
He shouldn't be blocking that many point-blank shots. It's taken years off of his life. Crazy how he has faced so many right-handed bombs on his side of the ice.
Edler also looked run-down with the years of babysitting that he has done. I want to see him finish his final year here and be done as a Canuck. Hopefully Olli and Rathbone will have supplanted him by then.

Its pretty clear who hes flushing.
Leivo coming back i find curious. What did he show Benning that has him thinking like that? Hes kind of a plumber
He sounded Joyous when asked for an update on Leivo. I found it peculiar, especially being that he is a UFA. Jim was gushing about Motte and the desire to sign him. So my take from that is he wants Leivo and Motte back. Jim did explain his Tuch comment from yesterday, I didn’t get the sense in his discussion with the Moj and Taylor today that he is completely giving up on Virtanen. Jim loves his size and speed, he sounded mildly disappointed but still on board with Jake. I keep getting the sense with how confident he sounds in Juolevi, Chatfield making the jump that Stecher is this “so called” RFA who will be sacrificed to get the Big 3 UFAs signed. Stecher will be the most expensive of the RFAs to sign, and most likely best chance at recouping a decent draft pick
I don't get this either. Green also seems to luv the fuck outta Leivo. Big step backwards to have the epitome of a Leaves-type player if you're trying to reach contender status.
For all the grief that Sutter, Beagle etal gets, at least they do the things that are expected from bottom line players. You don't win 2 rounds and reach a game 7 without that stuff.
I don't think it's unreasonable to say that Leivo is a serviceable player in the bottom-6.....who can be had for under $2M. He's also a fairly smart player for someone who would only be getting 10 minutes per game.
I think you have to keep one of Sutter or Beagle.....I'd be more inclined to the latter because he's cheaper and I don't want to listen to the urine crew go on about having a $4.5M 4th line center.
Out.....
Stecher
Eriksson
Sutter
Benn
Pearson
Ferland
Virtanen
That's $23.2M off the books.
Budget the following raises.....not saying give them the entire amount, just plan with a cushion.
Tanev $1.5M
Markstrom $3M
Toffoli $1.5M
Motte $2M
MacEwan $500K
Gaudette $1M
$13.7M left for UFA's.....minus whatever payroll comes back in trades of course (hopefully very little).
I'd be taking a hard look at Hamonic, Gudas, and maybe even Zadorov who plays both sides.
Hughes - Tanev
Edler - Myers
Juolevi - One of those guys
....and we all know that Doyle loves Hamonic.
Pysyk and Montour would also be worth kicking tires on.....the latter being RFA though so harder to make happen.
But I think that all of those guys could be signed for $4.5M or less, and in this cap climate perhaps on shorter terms.
People might think I'm nuts to even entertain the idea of more than $3M on a bottom pairing guy, however I think that the model going forward needs to be a more balanced blueline that has a bottom pairing that can play a bit closer up towards the 20 minute mark and not be a liability.
Most cup winners have that stud, game changing, top blueliner. Carlson, Pietrangelo, Chara, Doughty, Keith.....we might have that in Hughes, we certainly have the PPQB in him. But I'm not totally sold on him being that kind of stud defenseman who is so effective on both ends of the ice, even without the puck.
