Heres a half decent scribble about the Rathboner. Thats a sneaky good prospect Benning locked up holy fuck. A 4th rounder tracking to be a top 4 NHL dman within a year or 2. Nice
I really expect he'll have a spot to lose at next camp. I'd rather they do that than sign Barrie or someone similar for a few years even though they play different sides.
I think of all our dmen I think green may be comfortable playing Hughes on the right side, and if he does that really opens up that left side. Hughes and edler, Tanev and rathbone, and Myers and joulevi could be interesting. If rathbone can come in and have a season like his old partner fox did that will really help us out.
I wouldn't be surprised to see that but they're going to have a tough decision to make on Stecher. Local boy, heart and soul type player, and extremely popular with the fans and his teammates. It does mean something and they need to be sensitive to it.
The crappy part is that I think Juolevi is ready for a full-time job, but he's going to need to start on the bottom pairing. Stecher isn't the kind of partner you can give to a rookie defenseman who isn't known for physical play. Troy makes too many mistakes himself still. The pairings as they look now.....
Hughes - Tanev
Edler - Myers
_____ - ______
The only recourse for Tanev to stay and keep Stecher is to have Edler play with Stecher and Myers with Juolevi.
Unfortunately Edler has had his worst performances this past year when playing with Stecher, and Myers is as prone to brain farts as Troy, so that complicates things when it comes to pairing someone up with a rookie defenseman.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

They need a legit top 4 righty not named stetcher to take the next step. Regurgitating the same d core will be a step back.
Troy at a mill as a 7-8 defenseman is where he needs to be
Tanev is the priority. He simply must be signed for at least one more year for Hughes' development. Then have 2 new replacements to play behind Tanev and Myers.
Keeping the same D core is definitely a step back for a team that is trying to move forward. If anything VGK did, was exposed the pieces that required such a shitty system to compensate for, just so they can compete with elite teams. Vegans didn't give our D the time and space for our regular breakout. The gap was simply too big and it took too much time to execute cleanly.
Without the Dmen being able to easily fire the puck up to the red line for the forward to tip in, there is no forecheck and thus no sustained offence. The team got worn down chasing in every zone without any real puck possession. When it works they look faster than they really are. When it doesn't, people here complain about our guys being slugs.
The coaches need better players and to revamp the system so they can break out by skating and passing with good, close gap support instead. Guys like Benn, Fantenberg and Stecher shouldn't have primary or any roles on this team moving forward.

I agree, Shoulders. But I’d keep Fantenberg as your #7 D-man. Benn is not good enough for the NHL and Stecher is always under duress in the D-zone. It’s pure mayhem for Troy, the puck is like a hot potato on his stick

Stetcher is your number 5/6 defenceman.. starts at the bottom every year to claw to that spot. I don’t think he has ever had a ‘primary role’ on this team, and at his measly contract, probably shouldn’t be on your list..

There is no way I can see Stecher getting a raise. He's making 2.325 million now. I suppose he could play another year on a "see what happens",
contract but that isn't done too often in his situation. Maybe there will be exceptions all over the place this coming season.
I think the team finally moves on. Juolevi and Rathbone get regular roster spots and there may be a newby yet to be determined.
Tanev will stay.

Well, for one, we can all see that to move forward and grow, this team still needs a massive upgrade on D.
Secondly, cash is tight (yes, this is on JB) and the priority must be on Tanev. Stecher might have just become a luxury for what he brings. We need every measly dollar.
And lastly, we can see he can't necessarily be trusted to anchor the bottom pair as the 5/6 dman that he is. Frequently he has been sheltered by being paired with Edler and playing a more 'primary role' as a 3/4.
To go further into the playoffs, we need changes on the back end.

I agree we need changes, but the kids of changes we need are going to cost more than the 2.2 million allocated to stetcher.
What 2 million dollar defenceman is going to fix our defence??

Juolevi is the linchpin that decides where the team goes next year. Hes the affordable option with the highest upside.
All hail the mighty Ollie
Oh and we're gonna need Tanev resigned and another top 4 righty as well

Linchpin.... more like a poppy pin.
ANOTHER top 4 RH shot D man besides Tanev? Where is all this money coming from? Isn’t Myers a top 4 d man?

Myers is top 4 if the bottom pair RHD can actually play with the bottom pair LHD without trust issues and doesn't have to be sheltered with an aging and diminishing Edler.

Myers was good for us. The real weak link was the hot potatoe man. The Blews were holding back the Shenn line til he came out then consistently dumping it in his corner. The Wild were also trying this but with an obviously weaker forward group
