My favourite “driller” story…..

Old O&G driller was teaching at SAIT while my best friend was attending there for IT stuff. My friend got to observe some of the petroleum training when SAIT was running a course that was like training for rig hands (at the time they had a double stack drilling rig setup on campus, not sure if they still do this). This particular group was about a week in and at one point there was some equipment issue and after some troubleshooting the driller turned to one of the trainees and shouted, “Go get the cocksucker from the motherfucker and fix the son-of-a-bitch!”

This kid, who was only loosely paying attention to what was going on, snaps to attention and takes off like a scalded cat. Comes back a couple minutes later with exactly the right tool for the problem.

When my friend told me this story he was incredulous over the exchange and that it worked. Having been doing some medic work on the rigs for a couple years at that time I chuckled and told him it wasn’t unique. I definitely observed similarly barked “instructions”…..though admittedly none quite so generically obscure as that one.
