I'm firmly on the side that says you don't trade him unless you get good hockey return.
I disagree. He's a an upper-middle-six center. He is not 1st line quality.
That seems a weird range. There are 128 centers in the league. Wids says he is number 65 or higher, and implies no better than top 96th out of 128. WTF is upper middle 6? 60 to 76th?
A top-6 center is a 1st or 2nd line center.

A middle six center is a 2nd or 3rd line center.

An upper-middle-6 center would be a 2nd line center.

Pettersson is NOT a 1st line center anymore, no way now how can it be argued that he's been a 1C the past 2 seasons and change. Ergo, he cannot be a top-6 center. But he's still better than a 3C. Hence.....

It was tongue-in-cheek. Just inventing another silly criteria.

FFS, if he is top six or middle six he is a second line centre. I've never argued he is a top line centre but a top six which it seems you agree. Is he top six on every team. Duh, no. For sure some teams have way better top six, thus not every team would want to chance trading for him. But he is still top six. He is paid like a 1st line centre so he is way overpaid for his production, but he is still a top six centre. No way is he a 3rd line centre.

I have no problem trading him but not in a panic move or by moving other assets to do it. He still has utility on this team. We have the cap space. The rumours of him being a locker room cancer are just that. We have in all likelihood missed our window to trade him for a great return, that shipped sailed 2 years ago. But he is still valuable. I agree his cap hit will lower any return but no way no how should we dump him for scraps or attach any assets to move him. Maybe in a few years when we are further ahead in our development but not now.

We don't know if Rossi will extend with us past this year. We don't know how Cootes will develop. Chytle is done.

I still think the Alien will return!!!!!
The only HW the Canucks need

I think Rossi is signed for 2 more yrs, then RFA, so he is under team control.

I think the best place for EP40 would be a place like San Jose. Celebrini can take the all the limelight and Petey can quietly go about and just play his game as the 2C in a place where ppl don't really give a shiz abt hockey.

That being said, I expect him to be back cuz I don't think anyone would take his contract right now. I said at the beginning of the season, I would be happy with 70-80 pts from him. He got 50 pts, so it is a bit disappointing. JR even said as much in the presser; he said Petey doesn't have to be a 100 pts guy again, but if he can just get 80, it would be fine. I would agree and would use this as a benchmark for him again next season.

As one of our posters pointed out, EP40's contract is quite heavily loaded up front. In just 3 more yrs and after some of those signing bonuses are paid off, his salary in real dollars will take a big hit ($3.7M base salary). He has an improved defensive game, but if he can increase his point totals a bit by then, he might actually become to be a tradable asset.
