People guffawed when Conroy was hired.

Dude is bringing it.
Pretty decent haul for the Flames from Utah. The Flames are still missing star power on the forward lines. Hopefully that will come when they draft 1st or 2nd overall this season and next. By 2030 they should have a pretty decent team.

I definitely put the Flames rebuild ahead of the Nucks mostly because they're already set in goal for the next decade (appears so anyway). Their draft board and cupboard's better even if not by a lot. And you know they'll likely swoop in and select ahead of us this year no matter where they end up in the standings.

The only way to catch up or surpass is to hit on the draft picks and maximize the value on whatever players we have left that have value.

Only the bottom 11 can win the lottery as a team can only move up 10 spots by rule.

Your scenario is therefore highly unlikely.

The Oilers, I believe, will be in the playoffs.

They will outscore their problems to get there.

Yeah, I wouldn't write off the Oil. As long as they have McD they will find a way. I'd still like to do something on D and G by deadline if I were them, but as long as they make it in, they still have as good a shot as anybody.

And now that they have Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach, unstoppable. :drink:

I believe after todays deal they have about a half mill in cap space currently so would have to do some shifting about for more moves (doable)...some scuttlebutt has them in the Binnington hunt.

Lol.

I'd say their draft board is miles better than ours. They have 8 picks in the first 3 rounds this year, we have 4 picks in that range.

Next year we both have 4 picks in the first 3 rounds.....they have a pair of 1st rounders and we have a pair of 2nd rounders.

They have players that can probably get them more picks than we do.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

Cannot disagree.

There are two ways to beat the disparity. First is land in the better lottery position this year and hopefully the next. If we get the top 1 or 2 spots, and they drop outside the top 5, that alone should even out the draft board no matter how many more picks they have (but we all know our luck won't allow it to happen). And the other is simply draft better and hit on a higher percentage (again, our luck).

But yeah, things are looking pretty damn bright for BCE and fans on the other side of the Rockies. In a few years a new rink, new practice facility, and a new emerging young team if things continue to fall their way. Exciting times ahead for sure.

For us, so much rides on that damn fucking lottery. Lose it and dark days to continue many more years with little hope in sight.

people need to mentally and emotionally prepare to draft a swede at 3rd.

Joking aside, this deal shows the difference between dealing from strength vs dealing from weakness.

The Canucks have to package JD with a second to offload him for a waiver wire type defenseman. Why? Because JD wasn’t all that good and the Canucks were chronically against the cap and Lazar could be equally underwhelming but more cheaply so.

JD then played better (like the player he was acquired to be), before returning to an underwhelming player now making twice as much money (but no more term). The Blackhawks take that and turn it into a first (with Dach, who IMO probably plateaus as the bottom 6 energy guy who fills out an nhl roster but is unlikely to be special and whose type is generally affordably available each offseason. But the Oilers have shown they want these types in the system, as if they aren’t mostly fungible, hoping Dach is the next Sherwood and if he is, well, he’s young, so better.

To get that return for these players, Blackhawks had to take a year of Mangiapane, who is sort of like Beau2’s equivalent in the Horvat transaction — take some salary back, not a guy you’d be targeting, but hopefully a guy you will be able to get rid of. And have the space to retain in JD.

So if you have a JD, you can spend a decent asset to move it or you can get a (likely) late first. Timing, bargaining power, cap flexibility, it’s all powerful stuff.
