Bill Daly already said a month ago if the conditions are not up to standard or unsafe NHL players will not play.

And to think the Italians beat Sweden in the bid for the 2026 games. :(

We had a low budget proposal. Mainly using existing arenas and venues instead of building everything from scratch. Hockey, ice skating, etc in Stockholm, alpine events at Åre, crosscountry skiing and ski jumping in Falun. Basically just the luge and bob events that would need new construction. Everything would have been in place well before the games started.

As some disappointed and snarky member of the Swedish effort said afterwards ”we knew we’re better at winter sports than the Italians, but we forgot how much better they are at corruption”.

I would have loved for us to host an Olympic hockey tournament. :(

Sweden has never hosted a Winter Olympics. We had the 1912 summer games in Stockholm, but that was quite some time ago. And we hosted the equestrian events in 1956 as Australian border nazis refused to allow foreign horses to enter the country.

Per, that is what Vancouver/Whistler did in 2010, minimal new venues and those that were build, speed skating arena for instance became a high performance athletic training facility, were repurposed after the games.

Helicopters slinging snow to Grouse Mtn, who could forget.

as an aside, I took a geophysics course a couple of years after the Vancouver games and one lecturer described the near continuous real time airborne radiometric surveys over the lower mainland in the months ahead and during the games. Part of the security, they were surveilling for movement of radioactive material. We wait months for our data to be processed, they were getting it in realtime.

We may recall that Olympics got off to a roaring start when the Georgian kid crashed and died during a luge training run early in the games.

Nothing a couple of drywallers and a crapload of meth can't finish in 24 hours ;)

I was living in Athens during the 2004 Games and it was the same deal there. Venues were completed but shoddy. I remember going between events and and paving stones everywhere were wobbly. The aquatic center had no roof and the water was murky due to dust blowing in.

Athens had lots of street dogs. It was gross, dog shit everywhere, but they all miraculously disappeared just before the Games. We knew they'd all be euthanized but locals didn't care. They said all the dogs had come with foreigners on their vacations and were left behind.

I vaguely recall a story of an ex NHL'er being afraid for his life with respect to wild street dogs.

Maybe in Russia playing in the K??
