AaronP, you labelled Cootes as a potential 2/3 centre and looking at Cootes in the WJHC I would say you're probably right - if a little optimistic. He profiles as a Horvat-lite. Lotsa hustle; good two-way play by the eye-test; can put the puck in from the bumper; but not enough skill or skating to legitimately profile as anything more than a 3C with offensive upside. Horvat was better in board and puck battles at that age as well, though.

Still, if Cootes ends up as a 3C they could certainly do worse. If nothing else, he'd be cheap on that ELC.

I actually think Cootes may be a lot like Brendan Morrison, so really it will depend who he's playing with.

But having a defensively responsible centre is necessary for any playoff contender without question. He does have a good shot as well but he's likely to max at a 20 goal, 50 point guy.
