No Captain, My Captain.....Here We Go Again

Post by Meds »

Well, the Canucks are once again "C-less".....

Who should inherit this role now that Hughes has departed? That is indeed a question.

So I figured why not a thread for suggestions, but more than that, a discussion regarding what we want to see in the person/player who is finally awarded that honour.

If it has to be anyone on the current roster, it should be Hronek even if he hates talking to media. If not him, wait to see which kid blossom - Buium, Cootes, McKenna.

I hope they don't announce this season - no reason to.

I can't think of anyone who stands out AND isn't trade-bait right now.

Pretty sure they already said Hronek Boeser and EP were going to run with A's to finish the year.

As Cuz would say, that's gay.

I'm fine with running with a few A's.

If they need an interim C then Myers.

I'll start it off by saying that I was not necessarily a fan of Hughes being given the "C" when they made that call.

I loved the player, he was (is) an all-world talent, probably the best puck-handling and skating defenseman the league has seen, and far and away the best the Canucks have ever had. But I don't know that I loved him as a choice for the captaincy.

I recall at the time that the choice was between him and Miller.....and I was leaning toward Miller (which in hindsight may have failed even more spectacularly).

For me, I have to say that I have not been a fan of the captains on this team since Linden handed the letter over to Voldemort.

Linden wore his heart on his sleeve, he played physical, he led by example, he wasn't a guy to drop the mitts, but did know how to step up in big moments, and he wasn't pushed around. His commitment to the city and the fans was unquestionable (still is crazily enough). He played every foot of ice he was given. The only thing I would have liked from him was sometimes a little more visible fire in his belly that bled through.

Voldemort was a donkey of a decision. Enough said.

Naslund was a premiere scorer, but he didn't have that "big game fire" and the team fell short too often under his leadership.....and frankly the times they fell short were not all on him, but he was as much a no-show in those times as anyone else. Naslund was a guy who I stitch an "A" on his sweater all day long, but not necessarily the "C". He was as stoic as they come, a diplomat (as it were). He just never was a guy that I saw bellowing out a rallying cry and leading a charge.

Henrik (and Dank really).....more of the same. A consummate professional. Dedicated to his craft, insane commitment to fitness and preparation, not afraid of the dirty areas, IQ (x2 thanks to his twin) in spades, he was, a Swedish Linden.....except for the fact that he was easily pushed around and let people walk all over him. That mentality of "make them pay on the powerplay" spread to the team and players who pushed back too hard often didn't last here. Boston beat us in the alley.....and then every other team did too. I guess the easiest way to say it is that Linden would never have let Marchand speed-bag him with his arms at his side and appeal to the Zebra like that. The Sedins, were all-star HOF'ers who, unfortunately left this team with the reputation of being a Killer Whale with its tail between its fins.

Horvat.....he was sorta like Linden, but I was just never impressed with him in that role. Not sure why, just something about him I didn't like. It could have been that the similarities I saw between him and 16 in his early years were refined by the Hank and Dank to be a little more in keeping with their personalities and preferences. When considering the failings of Henrik (and Naslund before him), I think I was just looking for something a little more "Fuck You" in the face of bullies.

Hughes. As I commented elsewhere, he looks like he's medicated sometimes. In terms of play and skill, no question he was a leader, but does a guy like that inspire the guys who are not easily inspired? Does he rally the troops? Does he skate into conflict and scrums, or does he skate away? I was torn on that.

I'm just gonna say it, Messier is an ideal archetype to wear a "C" (sorry Corn). He was talented, he was tough, he engaged, he never took shit, and he was vocal. He was a disaster in Vancouver because of the circumstances here when he arrived and the way he inherited the letter, but nobody questions his career track record. Getzlaf is another guy that I liked as a captain. I like the Jets' choice of Lowry (and Dustin Brown in LA) when it comes to the person, but I think the player needs to possess more skill and be a driver when the team needs to punch on the scoreboard and not just in front of the net.

Yeah, I didn't mean this year necessarily, I just mean who comes next.....I don't think that anybody on the team right now is going to be sporting that letter the next time the Canucks are a contender. So there will need to be a "transitional" captain who hands it over to the Cootes/Buium generation of Canuck.

So, Mëds hates all of the Canucks captains... except for Lay's potato chips.

Corn has already banned him, he just doesn't know it yet. :look:

5th, I suspect Cuz is gay. Not that there is anything wrong with it. We welcome diversity here... as long as you toe the line.

Oh - geez - seeing that name come up was to be expected, I guess...

As for "Captain Material" - we really haven't had any in a long time - Mayber a Kesler or Bieska type, but the C was the Sedin's at that time.

Horvat was close, as you say - and likely the closest we got. Hughes - I don't know the backstory, but he seemed the logical choice at the time.

Looking at our current roster, I just see a bunch of 'meh' when it comes to Captain Material.

Looks like we'll have to either stick a C on with velcro, or wait until the next generation steps up.

Petey.

Strip all the A's from everyone else, and make his "C" cover the logo.

They seem to be OK with the twit running things (and people out of town...) Why not run the team too?
