The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. Definitely cheaper, I’m hearing a lot of complaints about those round (tube like) sauna kits that are popular right now, overrated.

I spend a lot of time in my shop, as I have taken up finish carpentry/millwork as a hobby. I've been building stuff like desks, wall units, head boards and as of this summer, I started building live edge wood/epoxy river tables. Also, I have a lot of antique furniture, some of which needed restoration. I completely restored my roll top desk, which was a challenge, but it looks great now.

Had a local dude make me a live edge dining table a while back.

Had him sit it on an Industrial base and combined with modern style chairs from Ginger Jar.

Was happy with the end result.

This is a coffee table I did recently. $350.00 worth of epoxy in this thing. All the wood was cut at my son's place up in northern Alberta.

Nice work, Expat!

I've got a friend who does that kind of work out here. He has a sawmill and a ton of wood drying. It amazes me how much work goes into one of those (and the costs!).

Yeah it was a cool experience the entire way.

Meeting the dude, hearing how he goes about it, seeing the shop, picking the raw material, visiting throughout the process.

A lot of fun.

Buddy of mine up here owns a mill. Mostly does cedar, and shingles in particular. Red is getting harder to come by because of the increasingly draconian government overlords making it harder and harder for small time operators to make it. We did a deck project this year and put a covering over the basement entrance. Used 6x6 (true) yellow cedar posts for the supports and framing. Got him to cut them for us. They look great, not sure if I'll stain them or not because the colour is pretty nice. Over the next year it'll fade to silver, at which point we will decide what colour to stain them or if we just want to pressure wash them as that apparently will take them right back to their original colour.

He ships stuff all over the place and was also doing a contract for a luthier based in Europe, sending him premium grains for guitar and mandolin tops.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

Chef Boi RD wrote: Sat Nov 01, 2025 9:53 am We just built a custom sauna for a client, all clear 1x4 t&g cedar inside, over $4.00 a lineal foot. The cedar bill was shocking. Select tight knot is 1/4 the cost but you shouldn’t be using tight knot in saunas, the knots burn you when they get hot plus they can loosen over time from the extreme temperature changes.
Ha! I've been looking to build a sauna for ages. But it is the price of clear cedar that has me running for the hills.
Yeah, that’s only part of it, the heaters are bloody expensive, size is based on the volume of the space. My client bought the Huum, ain’t cheap, but one of the top heater brands out there. Also, there is the electrician cost on top of that, not to mention “if” your current service can handle the extra load, but the wiring for a sauna is involved, not mention everyone wants the LED strip lighting everywhere. Did mini potlights in the ceiling, a tiled floor and tiled wall behind the heater. You also have to install a reflector foil before installing the cedar on walls and ceiling. We spray foamed the stud and ceiling cavities with 2 lb closed cell vapour barrier insulation. Installed spacers between framing (walls and ceilings) and cedar, like an air cavity. The trick part of sauna building was figuring out venting locations to create the air movement. Lots of different opinions on that, but if that ain’t done proper you’ll feel like your suffocating. I think we got it right - installed a passive air vent near the ground in front of the heater and installed 2 for options at the opposite end of the sauna, one high one low. All 3 vents have dampeners for air movement control. Everyone had different opinions on where to locate those, this I found to be the most frustrating part of sauna building
You are totally right on the opinions on these things - even down to if using spray foam is OK, some people say at sauna temps, it'll start off-gassing nasty stuff. Looking at the enviro label - seems to me you'd be a dried up husky before that happens. Hard to say. But I won't be running power to it. Wood fired all the way.

This is a live wood edge desk that I built - it's the one I use in my home office

Basement wall entertainment unit. This thing weighed a ton - took 3 guys to move it into the basement. The shelves are adjustable, so it they can be configured to fit whatever shit you want to put on them

Exactly what I'm doing, it takes time, as its not my full time job obviously. But working on a room at a time in my place. Desks, tables, millwork for laundry room etc.

A really relaxing way to spend time after work.
