Re: Canucks News N Notes 25-26
IF the difference in the return is minimal, why make a division rival stronger?

Re: Canucks News N Notes 25-26
The Oilers and Canucks have made two trades in the past year that helped one, the other, or both -- (Podkolzin, Kane). As much as I am with you on this one (experiencing a bit of schadenfreude over knowing Edmonton knows they need something more in net, wanted it from the Canucks, and didn't get it from the Canucks), the "don't trade with rivals" injunction is a bit overbroad given that Pittsburgh can trade Silovs to Edmonton tomorrow. So if Edmonton were to offer Pittsburgh something better than a 4th and a C prospect, they immediately come out ahead.
Yet Pittsburgh probably doesn't make that deal. Teams do not generally incrementally improve their future asset class in this matter because we don't know what they value their future value assets at. We know that Pittsburgh' values Silovs at an early 4th rounder and a C prospect, but we don't know how much greater they value him. We just know that the Canucks valued the 4th and C prospect more than Silovs.
My guess, looking at the Pittsburgh goalie situation, is that they would really like to have two potential near ready NHL goalies in the system who might be future starters and who they can at least put out there with a straight face during rebuild years. I don't see them moving on from Silovs unless their socks are totally knocked off (unless they also get a fairly young goalie at least as capable of playing in the NHL now as Silovs as part of the return. (No, not Pickford....) Their strategy here is likely Jarry and Silovs as a tandem, allowing Blomqvist to be a starter in the AHL and get in more games. Their hope is probably that Jarry looks decent again (I think unlikley, but not impossible), and then he becomes another asset to trade if Silovs is not terrible. Then Silovs and Blomqvist can battle for the #1 job (or their NHL existence).

Unlike Podz or Kane, Silovs has the ability to steal games and playoff series for many years. I am very happy he didn't go to the Coilers. A 4th for a high chance at a winning lottery ticket is too good of a deal to give to a rival.

What any other hockey team is doing and what they mean to us have nothing to do with us. You maximize your assets no matter what team is offering the best return. The Canucks should be worrying about their own house rather than worrying about what Silovs could mean for the Oilers. Jesus H, this mentality blows my mind, really. Who the fuck cares if it’s Edmonton. Should we not trade minor league goalies to any other team in our division? Or just Edmonton?
Re: Canucks News N Notes 25-26
From my perspective, if team X offers up a 4th, and team O offers a similar 4th, trade with the team that you like dealing with more. At most, the pick is from #97 to #128. This year, the two teams were 15 spots apart. Come 2027, who knows where either team will be in the standings. So, given basically the same assets, choose the team you like better. Now, if the Oilers were going to over-pay, take it. But if they were over-paying, Allvin would hav taken that deal instead.Chef Boi RD wrote: ↑Thu Jul 24, 2025 10:58 am What any other hockey team is doing and what they mean to us have nothing to do with us. You are over-reacting. It's not like we are discussing trading Joshua for cap space when we didn't need to

On top of that, the difference between rounds as you get into the draft, differences are negligible. I don't know Puckpedia's formula for assessing asset value, but they have a first round pick as being about 5 and a half times more valuable than a second round pick. A 2d round pick is estimated as about 6 times more valuable as a 4th rounder (thus the 1st rounder is more than 30 times more valuable than the 4th. The 6th rounder is only about 3 times less valuable than the 4th.Tciso wrote: ↑Thu Jul 24, 2025 2:20 pmFrom my perspective, if team X offers up a 4th, and team O offers a similar 4th, trade with the team that you like dealing with more. While I don't know their formula and of course is matters where the first rounder lands (there's a ton of sliding value early), it is a useful illustration of how dramatically top heavy NHL drafts are in terms of providing value. Getting a 4th for a player is a little better than waiving a guy, for sure, but its like getting another scratch off ticket where most "wins" are player-types who are easily available every off season, and only rarely will you find an impact player. You have to play to have that chance, but it better not be a retirement plan.
