Maybe the Canucks could be like the new version of the Lemaire Devils era. The strength of those NJD teams was goaltending and defence like the Canucks now. The Devils didn’t necessarily have elite superstar forwards either.
Come on Chef - between their 2000 & 2003 runs, they had depth at forward the likes of which the Panther's would be jealous of:
Elias, Nieuwendyk, Arnott, Mogilny, Langenbrunner. Gomez, Friesen, Madden, Gionta - it was a perfectly created defensive forward group - anyone of these guys could have won the Selke in their prime (well, maybe not Gionta or Mogliny). I think Madden might have.
The Devils 2003 cup winning forward roster:
Patrik Elias
Scott Gomez
Jamie Langenbrunner
John Madden
Brian Gionta
Jeff Friesen
Sergei Brylin
Jay Pandolfo,
Turner Stevenson
Jim McKenzie
Pascal Rheaume
Grant Marshall
Jiri Bicek
Mike Rupp.
Yeah, Jello Bud, Chef disagrees with you big time. The heart of that Devils cup winning line up in 2003 was defence and goaltending, as it always was. I will even go as far as saying our current forward group with the best version of Pettersson can match that forward group. I’ll take the best version of Petey over Elias 8 days a week.
The key trifecta is:
Hughes, Hronek and Demko
Vs
Neidermeyer, Stevens and Brodeur
Unfortunately for us, the Devils win in that department. If Willander pans out as we all hope and Elias D Pettersson continues to impress, throw in M. Pettersson, the two defences “overall” could be on par with each, that is if the two kids keep impressing. Although Rafalski and Daneyko were pretty damn good.
