They did better than I expected TBH. The Debrusk contract to me isn't a bad contract. Its right where it should be for his average points and defensive play. Plus he has begun to emerge as a good PKer. Sure a 5-6 year deal would have been nice but we don't get him without 7 years. Both Calgary and Edmonton kicked the tires as it was known he wanted to be closer to home and come to the West. But neither team offered 7 years. So the price we pay to get him. He is moveable after his NMC is done and by then the Cap should be at 1 billion per year.
So I don't think it is a bad contract at all.
Getting two big guys on D, one lefty and one righty, was impressive. Neither may bring what Big Z did overall but combined they provide depth, defensive experience, PK ability, shutdown roles. So good signings.
Sherwood I love that signing. So does Quinn
Heinen I don't know much about but he brings speed, defensive play, pk experience and a desire to come home.
Patera, what's not to like at $775,000 per year? Allows us to have completion at camp. It allows us to park Silovs in Abbotsford for one more year, maybe. If Silovs makes the team then we have a very good experienced AHLer backing up the 2 kids.
I liked that we didn't blow 7-9 million on one player on a long term 7 year deal. I liked that we used the money wisely to fill several holes. I liked how we have bought time for development of the younger players like Lekemakki, Willander, DPetty, and perhaps to some extent Silovs. I like how we are mindful of the OEL jump the next two years and kept contracts reasonable.
Allvin did say the one thing he would like to do is to not be playing in LTIR. He talked about how it makes it tough to make deals with that hanging over the team and more importantly how it hampers the team from calling up young kids to give them a taste. My take is that he is still very active in looking for ways to dump the Poolman contract. I mean seriously if he could dump that contract plus lose one of, Aman, PDG, Friedman or Podkolzin then we have 3M+ of cap space.
He also said if a deal presents itself that makes sense they will look at it so you know they would still like to upgrade, especially on D, but the deals to make sense on so many levels.
And next year just got easier with respect to UFAs. Up front, Boeser, PDG and Suter are UFA, Hoglander RFA. On the back end, Forbort, Juulsen and Friedman are UFA, no RFAs. Goalies set. So next year we should have more cap space anf fewer FA to worry about. Allvin has bought development time.
