The modern press has long since gone beyond the point of where they operated in a fashion that warranted those rights and freedoms.

You say they no longer deserve "those rights and freedoms". To me that sounds like you do not support the concept of a free press.

But very few countries do. According to the most recent Press Freedom Index, only 14 countries qualify for the highest category of press freedom.
Canada is close though, in 16th place. Almost made the cut. Maybe next year!

The USA is now in 45th place, trailing countries like Jamaica, Namibia, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Botswana, Trinidad and Tobago and Uruguay and is roughly on par with Papau New Guinea and Senegal. I donnu, didn't Donny have a name for those countries?

At least it's not as bad as Turkey or Russia. Or (shudder) China. Yet.

Well in the USA it’s pretty clear that the elected federal government does not control the press. So who pulls their strings? Who is censoring them?

In Canada we have the CBC. They are heavily biased towards the Liberal government because they are government funded. Which seems to me that would get in the way of objectivity.

You see, from what I’m gathering is that you think the press should be free to say whatever they want. I’d be fine with that, if indeed that was the case for every side of every argument. However it’s not the case at all here. You either get in like and drink the kool-aid or find yourself ostracized and ridiculed.....or barred completely. The freedom of the press should not be something that journalists and bloggers stand behind while conducting character assassinations.....something they routinely do.

Maybe the difference here is what we think the left side of the political spectrum looks like? From my perspective the left wing has become very black and white in the sense that if you don’t agree with them you are an automatic enemy, and one to be eradicated.

While I consider myself a conservative, particularly when it comes to economics, I am a strong proponent of live and let live. I believe everyone is entitled to their beliefs, their rights as individuals.....the right to vote, speak out, opine, contribute and participate, object, whatever. Even if I disagree with their opinion then they have a right to it, and I do not have the right to persecute them for it to the point of slander, and personal harm. But that very thing is what I see the “leftist” parties doing. They preach tolerance and individual freedoms, but they trample those things in action.

Perhaps it’s not the left that is the problem, perhaps it is that the left has swung so far left that it has become the fascist right that it so hates.

No. Freedom of speech should be across the entire spectrum. It should not be a question of left or right.

Great! That’s the way it should be! Freedom of speech and a free press must be guaranteed.
But what you say may have consequences. If it is found to be slander, then that goes beyond the rights that you have.
Likewise, if you are inciting people to commit crimes.

It’s kind of like gun rights. You may have a right to have a gun, but if you use it wrongfully, you face consequences.
