Didn't get a chance to read all the reaction here to today's events yet, so sorry if someone already brought this up but my initial thoughts upon hearing the Schmidt signing is the sum of today becomes trading Tyler Madden, a 2nd rounder and a 3rd rounder for Nate Schmidt.
If you don't look at as giving up a lot only to lose Toffoli, but rather in its entirety a single trade to gain Schmidt, that's really not a bad deal at all. Certainly takes the sting away from feeling like we lost those assets for nothing. Not to mention retaining the potential haul of assets we would've lost on the OEL deal..a 1st rounder, OJ, Hog,...or whatever the package would've been.
We can debate till the cows come home who of the 3 D (OEL, Schmidt, or Tanev) we would've been better off with while taking all their ramifications into consideration, but for me it's easy, I choose Schmidt and imo today couldn't have worked out any better with how we got him. Was super impressed with him during both Vegas' runs.
Lastly, again haven't scrolled posts yet but if someone hasn't posted a gif of Schmidt's bomb past Marky in the playoffs they should now. Funny how painful that was last month and looks so damn sweet now.
If all things were equal, I would prefer OEL.
But all things aren't equal. The Yotes wanted too much, and the cap and term were a bit steep, not to mention a full NMC.
This, on the other hand is a sweet, sweet, sweet, sweet deal.
Sure, slightly more than we paid Tanev, but he has had some issues with injuries and imho this is an upgrade.
And all we gave up was a third round pick. In 2022.
Me happy.
Whatever you do, always give 100 %!
Except when donating blood.
I get Vegas really wanted to sign Pietrangelo but gifting Schmidt to the Canucks seem nuts. The Canucks just took them to game seven and they were a Boeser shot away from eliminating them. Schmidt was excellent at moving the puck out of his zone fast which was a reason the Canucks were constantly hemmed in their own end for much of that series. He skates really well with the puck and passes it well out of his zone. You would think someone in another division would get this player before the Canucks. I think Schmidt makes the Canucks much better a transitioning the puck out of their zone with pace.
Tanev was a great Canuck and always concerned about defensive positioning and forcing the opposition to the outside.
If I were killing a penalty, I’d prefer Tanev out there, but he doesn’t have the quick transition ability of Schmidt, either passing or skating the puck out of the defensive zone. With the offensive the Canucks already have, this player makes the team more dangerous offensively. I don’t know the circumstances that stopped Vegas from trading Schmidt outside of their division, perhaps no trade clauses, or no cap space limitations elsewhere, or they felt they owed the player a say in where he was moved? Whatever the case, I think Vegas is going to regret gifting the Canucks this player.

Why do you add the cost of acquiring Taffoli? Your justification?
Wouldn't you apply the same reasoning to Markstrom?
There is no logical reason to include Taffoli without stretching to incredulous assumptions. He was a rental plain and simple. Filled in for Brockey_Hockey while injured.
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.
I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.
I hope Vegas threw in some fresh underwear for the panty-wetters in the market.
Blob, your thoughts?
Good pick up... still a few NHL players short of a team including no D depth that can play the right side.... after you stop chomping Doc’s cock..... ESQ ..... your thoughts?
Mr. Miserable still not happy? C’mon Doyle’s! Jim is like Blondie from the good the bad the ugly. Extremely calculating. He saw this coming, he got the vibe early that Pietrangelo was Vegas bound. Fuck is Jimbro good!!
Hmm, interesting interesting, Its almost like....he didn't tie up his one phone line trying to bend over Arizona for OEL, knew this was in the pipeline once Vegas got Pietrangelo to Piet Pien to Piaper, then got his D upgrade.
Or, I dunno, maybe he only has one phone line and lost Tanev and Stecher and just , I dunno, farted his way into this deal? Is that the narrative?
Blob, you wrote a long post about Benning only making one call all week to Arizona, your thoughts?
Went from having to give up a Podkolzin/Hoglander/Demko in the OEL trade to a 3rd aha, Schmidt.
Has excellent puck-moving skills and can jump-start the counter-attack effectively from the back end. Is capable of playing on either side of the ice and can log a lot of ice time. Isn't very physical and somewhat undersized for the National Hockey League game, so he must prove capable of handling bigger forwards consistently at the highest level.
Long Range Potential: Solid, mobile puck-moving defenseman with a little upside.

Good pickup by Benning. Wish Schmidt was 27 instead of 29 considering his contract and age of the core, but the acquisition cost is pretty sweet. Like UWS pointed out, I don't think Benning wanted to be hemmed-in by term and NMCs - which is what Markstrom and Tanev wanted in the end. With that, and a flat cap, in mind this was about as good a deal as he could have gotten to fill a top-4 hole.
People bitching about Benning letting Toffoli go after what he gave up in trade need to recall that that trade was made before COVID kicked the league out of whack. Without the pandemic, the flat cap and internal revenue struggles, I have little doubt that Benning would have been happy to re-sign Toffoli at a similar deal to what he got in Montreal. Toffoli is a COVID casualty for the club.
While I'm not expecting anything dramatic from the youngsters likely to fill in the rest of the cracks in the roster, I anticipate that they'll fill those depth holes sufficiently that the team won't take too much of a step backwards.
I suspect we've seen the big drama for the team this offseason, barring the Virtanen arbitration and Gaudette signing.
Up there with Gillis picking up Ehrhoff for nothing.
Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.

Given Toffoli signed elsewhere on the same day, twas merely a hypothetical summation of the day's events. Outlining the totality of all the parts involved was only meant to be taken for what its worth, nothing more.
Fully aware Toffoli was a rental and they're two completely unrelated transactions.

So...deployment. How do y'all reckon the pairings look now? Is it Hughes with Schmidt or Edler and Schmidt?
I’d try Edler Schmidt.
Gives a pace pusher on both pairs.
Hughes Myers looked good together, but they usually only got together when the team was down a goal.
If they can hold a lead together, they would be a good pairing.
Edler Schmidt would probably match up against other team’s top lines.

Toffoli was a casualty of the lousy contracts on the books and the luongo re-capture penalty. In retrospect it was an expensive rental and a waste of assets. Toffoli is the type of player a team adds when you're trying to win a cup, but the Canucks traded for him to help just make the playoffs. We can say now with clarity it was another dumb Benning move. Full stop.

They were a Boeser shot away from eliminating Vegas. Who knows what could have happened if Toffoli wasn’t on the limp. I guess your anti-Benning agenda didn’t let you watch the playoff run. It was enjoyable for Canuck fans. Toffoli turned out to be a rental to make the playoffs when Boeser was Injured. Covid interrupted that plan, but the playoffs were made, and the kids had a great run and will be more prepared for the next one. Nothing wrong with getting a rental for that.
My two cents, I know not worth that much, out of our 3 big UFAs the one I thought for sure we would re-sign was Taffoli. My belief was probably tied to the assets we gave up to bring him in and his chemistry with Pettersson. I understand the reasoning for not bringing back both Markstrom and Tanev and looking at what they got and the NMC they got, I am fine with it. Happy with brought in Holtby, I think he is a good stop gap measure for now and give Demko some breathing room to develop. Schmidt, assuming he doesn't test positive again, I am very happy with and giving up a 2022 3rd round pick is a steal. Our top 4 D already looks much better than last season. Fattenberg will probably we turn on the cheap to give some stability in the bottom pairing with a rookie and Benn will be the number 7. Still wouldn't be surprised if JV is gone.
By my count we have just over 20 million coming off the books after next season with only Pettersoon, Hughes and Demko needing significant raises and yes they will take up most of that. So, who is slated to be available in the UFAs pool next season?
BTW, the year after, we have about 15 million coming off the books. EDIT: If you include Holtby coming off the books at this time it would add another 4.3 million to that total. Hopefully Benning doesn't bring in anymore dead weight on horrible deals.

When you take into account what is coming off the books you also have to look at replacing those bodies with other players. This is where someone like Pod is worth a lot because he will be on a ELC. It will take 2 season for all the crap to come off.
Next season with Sutter, Pearson, Edler, Benn and Baertschi coming off that is roughly $19.5M (if my math is right) - QH and EP will go from $2M combined to $16M+ combined. They still have to replace the 5 that are leaving.
I know JB can do it but we should expect to see a cheap 4th line consisting of players make league minimum.

It is them and the Ryan Spooner buyout - that gets you to 20.521 million coming off. Yes, I do think Pettersson, Hughes and Demko will take up almost all of that. More importantly, the dead weight will coming off of the bottom 6 and yeah, I expect 'cheaper' replacements for them.
Edit:
Also, if Holtby is claimed by Seattle, that's another 4.3 million off the books. Demko would probably take most of that and we sign a cheap back up for him.
The cheap backup for Demko in 1-2 years is Dipietro. Hopefully not for another 2 years as I think he needs all the time he can get developing in the minors.
