Big haul?Hockey Widow wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 1:01 pm Someone floating a rumour that Benning has asked for permission to speak to Barrie's agent. Most probably BS but if true it would suggest to me that the Canucks are about to give up a significant haul for him.

Where you getting these rumours? Rick Daliwals followers on Twitter?

I guess the reasoning goes if they seek permission and reach a deal or an understanding then the Canucks will be willing to pay what leaves ask for. I didn't say I believe the rumour. In fact I said it is most likely BS.

One would assume if he is indeed talking to the agent it would be to negotiate an extension prior to trading for him so his pending UFA status would no longer be an issue

The pee pee pants crew wouldn’t have made those trades. A couple of idiots or maybe just one suggested I wanted to trade Boeser for a Larsson type D man based on fuck all.Strangelove wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 4:58 pmAgain with the paranoid delusions, you really should see someone about that.Doyle Hargraves wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 10:01 am I never suggested Boeser for Dumba. Look I've studied the Stanley Cup defense groups for awhile now and if you don't have a true #1 dman ala Pronger, Lidstrom, Doughty, Keith(yuck), Chara(ew), Carlson, Pietrangelo types - then you have to construct a Penguins style team D - Letang we have in Quinn Hughes - prolific QB, but they also had one more dman that score well then had big two way types and big vet defensive dmen.
Which is why I see the point in getting Barrie, having two QB's is better than one!
then you surround em with savvy vets, with a couple big hulking dmen to handle the bulldozer forecheckers out there.

Can the Canucks just win a Cup within the next 5 years.

To Doiley's point, Werenski would be a very interesting pick-up - a goal-scoring Dman. I have him in my fantasy league, and Werenski is the league-leading goalscorer amongst defencemen - and oddly, has more goals on this season than Boeser.
I find it a little weird that in his 4th season in the league, Werenski still isn't averaging >18 min/gp, but he is killer on the PP and also is on the top PK pairing - on a mediocre Columbus team.
I like the idea of adding Barrie in the off-season (trade Sutter and Loui retires and it could happen), but I don't see the point of giving up anything of value for him as a rental. Stecher straight-up? Absolutely. Whatever Barrie's faults, he's so obviously a massive upgrade on Stech.
Tanev straight-up for Barrie? What say you Skyo?

I agree, but I'm a little on the fence about whether Barrie is That Guy...at least this season.

Theres enough smoke in this story to conclude these rumours have validity. Weve been hearing whispers about Barrie wanting to come to Van for over a year now and its looking like it may be happening.Chef Boi RD wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 6:16 pmDoes the salary cap no longer apply to the Vancouver Canucks? The Brown Wizard wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 6:13 pm One would assume if he is indeed talking to the agent it would be to negotiate an extension prior to trading for him so his pending UFA status would no longer be an issuewe haven’t even signed Hughes and Pettersson to their 8 figure contracts yet
If its Stetcher plus a second tier prospect I'm fine with it but a hard no if Tanev is involved unless Jimmy has the inside scoop on him wanting to sign in TO this summer

Here's a different take on it.Chef Boi RD wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 6:16 pmDoes the salary cap no longer apply to the Vancouver Canucks? The Brown Wizard wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 6:13 pm One would assume if he is indeed talking to the agent it would be to negotiate an extension prior to trading for him so his pending UFA status would no longer be an issuewe haven’t even signed Hughes and Pettersson to their 8 figure contracts yet
Most have assumed that Sakic traded Barrie because he had younger guys in the pipeline and was unwilling to pay Barrie a salary ask that was presumed to be as much as $8M AAV.
Taking a look at Barrie's career stats and contract history....
He signed his current deal of $5.5M for the 2016-17 season following a pair of 50+ points per 82 game seasons which he produced while under a 2 year contract worth $2.6M, and that was built on two years of ELC where he scored at a similar pace. His last two seasons in Colorado saw him put up numbers at a 60+ point pace.
So it seemed a reasonable assumption that he would be asking for a contract that runs similar to blueliners like Letang, who seems like a good comparable because Letang has a more offense first style of game and his numbers are produced playing on a team led by Crosby and Malkin, while Barrie benefits from the likes of MacKinnon and Rantanen. It's quite likely true that his agent would have sought that.
Here's a twist though. Barrie is a career minus-67, and while +/- is a Mickey Mouse stat of sorts, it's also not easily dismissed when it comes to defensemen, particularly the ones playing on the top pairing of a high scoring team, and it did come up considerably last season. On top of that Barrie's numbers have dropped off, while playing on a team that is again loaded with high scoring forwards, but his +/- has maintained a similar track to last season, this while playing on a team that doesn't know what defense is.
The trade to Toronto has hurt Barrie's career path in terms of negotiating power in his big UFA season, and his age (29 this summer) does him no favors as an UFA looking for a payday with any kind of term. I can't see a reasonable ask of anything north of $6.5M from Barrie from any team unless that team is desperate to have him.
Based on that I have no trouble believing that Benning has interest, and that he has requested permission to speak with Barrie's agent, but that interest is going to be contingent on how conversations go. If Barrie wants to come home he will have to give a hometown discount, particularly if he wants any kind of term.
It's not inconceivable that Benning thinks he can bring Barrie home for the same price tag as Edler, and for a term of 5 years or less. It's more likely if he is fairly confident that Tanev will be headed to Toronto next year as a free agent.
The question is whether or not that's worth it and what kind of changes would need to be made to the roster, and how confident Benning is he can do it.
Loui, Stecher, Sutter, Tanev, Baertschi, and Ferland, all combine for a $22.95M.
There's a chance none of them are back next season.
When it's time to pay Pettersson and Hughes we will have seen Edler's $6M also disappear.
If all of those names are somehow gone next year it's possible to do the following...
Toffoli $5.5M
Virtanen $4M
Barrie $6.5M (Based on desire to play in Vancouver and a bad year)
Markstrom $6.5M
Gaudette $2.5M
MacEwan $1.25M
And still have $9.1M in space for 2 defensemen and 2 forwards.
The question is just whether it's worth it.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

This would be something I could see Jim doing if Tanman expresses a desire to test UFA waters and try and play at home in Ontario.ESQ wrote: ↑Sun Feb 23, 2020 8:48 pm To Doiley's point, Werenski would be a very interesting pick-up - a goal-scoring Dman. One further thought on adding Barrie. It would require finding a stable, decently mobile, defense-first minded partner for him and possibly one for Hughes. Preferrably one with some size and/or moxie. Benn seems to be a guy that doesn't have the mobility or hands for Travis to trust enough.
Gudas, Edmunson, and Nick Holden, come to mind.
Edler - Barrie
Hughes - Gudas/Edmonson
Holden - Myers

Vegas and canucks are the two teams trying hard to land him. The trade to either team will apparently already have a contract waiting for barrie.
So, seems like HW is correct with benning wanting to talk to the agent.
Also, baertchi may be on the way to toronto. I hope we dont pay too much. But if we do get Barrie, does that not make us a contender? With boeser to return later. We are a pretty stacked team.
