Re: Canucks Young Guns
Dahlen and Goldobin bring skill, finesse, potential point getters. If they both translate into NHL players this will be remembered as a great TDD.
But like Baertschi they will need to learn to play a two way game. To Baertschi's credit he is playing a little tougher and a stronger D game. His points are coming. So patience. It may take both Dahlen and Goldobin a couple of years to earn their playing time.
We need to add size up front and a playmaking centre or two to help them out. But it sure will be nice to see some flash up front again.

Almost all of the attention has been focused on minutes given to the forward group, I'm just as interested in how WD dishes out minutes to his young guns on the back end...Dahlen and Goldobin bring skill, finesse, potential point getters. Was disappointed over how many minutes Edler received against the Habs, (he's gotta be playing hurt although that doesn't explain how slowly he seems to be processing plays)...
Was happy to see Edler was left out of the first two rotations on the 3 on 3, but then question why Tanev and not Stetcher was sent out to start the 3 on 3...
Once Tryamkin returns, I'd be disappointed if Edlers minutes don't take a huge dip and to a lessor degree Tanev's...
Gotta think Edler is a high priority to be moved this off season...
Next season the team sees the return of Cederholm from loan to a Swedish team that could meet Dahlen's team in the Swedish playoffs....
He's added to a pool of young guns on the back end that is quickly becoming a rounded group which includes skill and size...
Amongst all of the b*tching and complaining Benning receives, he's kept his head down and gone about very quietly putting together a group of prospects who give fans a lot to look forward to...
Take care...

My biggest issue with Willie is how he refuses to play the youngsters in tough positions, preferring guys like the twins, Edler, even Megna and Chaput over guys like Bo (until recently) and Sven, and now Goldobin. Stecher is one anomaly as Willie seems to play him in almost every situation, but the fact remains that the young guys need experience in tough spots in order to Improve. Edler doesn't need to play 26-28 mins a night, we've seen that movie before and it's produced horrible results and a consistent bottom feeding team, in 3 of the past 4 years anyway.
Which brings me to my next point, I would hope that Benning has assembled a good number of prospects - they've finished in the bottom 6 in the league 3 of the past 4 years, assuming they do it again this year and I think they will. That's awful, but it does allow you to pick high and get good prospects. Benning seems to be a good drafter, he's picked Tryamkin, Demko, Gaudette, Boeser, Lockwood and Forsling who all seem to be good to great value. He might have also blown some high picks in Virtanen and McCann (it's early I know), but in general has done a solid job in the draft. My issue with Jim is he keeps trading picks - a high 2nd, a 4th and McCann for Gudbranson who was terrible this year, a 2nd for Vey, a 3rd for Dorsett, a 3rd for Pedan, 2nd for Baertschi, a 5th with Kassian, a 2nd for Sutter, 6th for Etem, 5th for Larsen. He got a couple of picks back as well but nowhere near as many as he's traded. Why the hell does a team this bad think trading picks for 25ish year old players is smart business? Mid round picks and how you build your depth and the Nucks have none on the big team, though hopefully some is coming soon from recent drafts.
Hopefully this pick trading has stopped because it's easily the best way to build your team. Perhaps this year we will have an extra 1 or 2 with the Sharks and CBJ, but that needs to be a regular occurrence.
I just don't see why we should give Benning much credit for building up a good system given the ammo he's had due to on ice results. He was bound to with multiple top 10 picks and needs to keep his later picks where he's shown he can find value. It's the same for Burke in the late 90's - those teams were so awful that got him the high picks to take the twins. He should get some credit for the actual trade but much of it is lost given he also put together some horrific teams to give him the chance.

Hey DieHard...
Not an up-to-date recap of Bennings work while in Vancouver but it does a give a fairly accurate breakdown of his transactions....
http://www.nucksmisconduct.com/2016/2/2 ... raft-picks
Interesting the negative comments from fans over the Shinkaruk for Grandlund deal...
Regarding Chaput, an article from todays Province...
http://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nh ... -he-should
Should the team be further ahead in the rebuild than it is?
You think it should which is fair...
But what are you basing that on? For me as compared to the likes of the Avs and the Flames and the Islanders and the Canes and the Jets are they taking longer to rebuild?
The Oilers and the leaves each took 10 years and the luck of the lottery to draft McDavid and Matthews, are the Nucks rebuilding slower than they are?
Maybe I'm being overly optimistic but given what Benning has done with a 5th and a 6th and a 23rd over the past 3 seasons and the picks that weren't dealt and the acquisitions he did make I'm feeling pretty confident that the team won't be languishing in lottery pick territory for nearly as long as the teams listed above have...
Benning has made some very astute trades prior to this year with the Baertshi and the Grandlund deals being home runs...
I was interested in how he would do at this years deadline because this is the first opportunity he's had to deal from a position of strength since he got here and the jury sez he did a very good job...
We are very fortunate that he is a master talent evaluator, which will ensure that the rebuilding period takes less time than most do....

This isn't going to be popular, but:
Go all out, whatever it takes, and make a really BOLD attempt to get to Gaudette, (and his parents), and his ("advisors". LOL), ready to go for 2017/2018, ya, next season.
To hell with patience, sometimes a fast track is in order. I think this is one of those times, and NO, he wont be another Jake!
Tell him if he's ready and shows it in camp and pre-season, there's a spot on the team for ya!
Skip the Utica thing.
This kid will be 21 in October and some thing tells me, is what we've been seeking for a long time.
So, Trevor, throw out the slow, slow, slow approach, at least this time...

This exactly what Benning has been doing for three years. If a player earns a spot, sometimes even when they don't, they get time with the Canucks. The young kids have had plenty of playing time over three years. Not all of them of course. There is Pedan, Subban, and, and, and, who else?
Vey was given plenty of rope. So was McCann, so was Virtanen. Larsen this year. Baertschi, Granlund, Horvat, Hutton, Stetcher, Trymakin. Gaunce, Chaput and now with injuries Boucher and Goldobin.
It's easy to focus on one or two kids that are not playing for the Canucks and ignoring the horde that are already playing or who have been given chances. How many times have we said, especially over the last two season, ok not so much the first as we were solidly in the playoffs, that we are icing an AHL team?
If Gaudette signs and if he shows he is NHL ready there is every reason to believe he will be here next year. Same as Boeser. Obviously if they don't sign they won't be. But if they sign and like Stetcher are on the cusp but there are slightly better alternatives they will be allowed to develop in Utica. As it should be. Fortunately for Stetcher early injuries derailed that plan and he has earned a spot but if Gudbranson had been healthy he would have been the one sent down, a numbers game.
There is a major misconception spread by misinformation that the Canucks don't develop their kids and don't give them a chance. We can all name a player or two we would like to see but that ignores the ones we are seeing.

On pace for a 4 point increase over last season. Two playoff wins in four (soon to be five) seasons. Since 13/14 the Canucks are 24th in point % in the NHL.rikster wrote: But what are you basing that on? I wouldn't be too quick to throw other teams under the bus.

All we need is to find at least 1 top 70+ point player and this team will get back into the swing of things quickly.

I think Sbisa is only 22.
You forgot Grenier, Gartieg, Negrin Stewart, Zalewski and Laplante.

Benning and Linden, not quite finished their 3rd season (starting with the 2014-15 season) since taking over Gillis' sinking ship and already they have accumulated a better looking future than the shit show Gillis drafted and developed in his SIX YEARS at the helm.Blob Mckenzie wrote:Blue chip young guns one and all. Nice work dude.
Gonna add Jalen Chatfield who just signed a 3 year ELC today, a two-way stalwart dman.
Also of note with Olli Juolevi, with Dvorak, Tkachuk and Marner all gone - Juolevi is still scoring at same pace....salute to our future Hampus Lindholm.

Curious move signing Chatfield. Underwhelming numbers, but it sounds like he's another two-way d-man. Tate Olson and Carl Neill are both wrapping up their Junior career's, I wonder if either of these guys did enough to earn a contract.
