Just before P. Trudeau was elected in the late 60s, Canada was in a position to be almost totally self sufficient.
One of the first things he did was float our dollar and that changed things.
In regards to Climate change, there is no doubt it is a combination of human emissions and a natural cycle, a cycle this planet goes through on a regular basis.
Because of my work as a private photographer for both the Canadian Military and the U.S. Military in the past, I have been privy to seeing many photos, not released to the general public, taken from the space shuttle.
By a very, very wide margin, the worst pollutants are coming from Asia and South America. It is so bad, you can see the material rising like volcanoes and forming bands around the planet. The bands from Asia are directly affecting the "jet stream" that brings North America her weather.
You will NEVER see images like these from the ISS because of the politics involved.
I don't think it is fair to show a graph of carbon emissions on a per capita basis and I question the validity of it.
Here in Canada and yes, the U.S. too, have many. many, programs in place to reduce our emissions.
China? The way they spew out pollution without any consideration is a crime against humanity, same with the burning of the forests in S. America. Oh forgot to say, IMO, oh well.
Some times I wonder why we even try to do our part.
Take it to the UN? LOL LOL LOL
If we were more self sufficient, we could stop selling them coal, eh..........

Of the ten warmest years on record, eight have happened within the last decade.
99% of scientists in relevant fields are convinced that global warming is happening and that it Modt likely caused by humans.
The oil and coal industry is spending a fortune trying to convince people it's a hoax, just like the tobacco industry has supported research trying to prove that smoking isn't causing cancer. But it is happening. Look at the glaciers, the polar ice caps, etc.

Through all of this, in the time of homo sapiens there have been several warming and cooling cycles. Just the other day research was released that doubt a land migration south for Clovis people through a newly opened corridor in the ice saying that it would have been a few thousand years before that opening could support an ecosystem for that migration and the new proposal is a migration northward, primarily by sea along the coast.
In any event, climate change is an ongoing dynamic system. Life on Earth has survived the change from a reducing environment to an oxidizing one as well as several mass extinctions that have wiped out nearly 90% of species. Life will keep doing so.
Those who are fighting to preserve our stasis in that dynamic are fighting a loosing battle.

There may be a hoax perpetrated on what to do about climate change but its undeniable that the earth is getting warmer and it doesn't take a genius to figure out burning fossil fuels at the rate 7.5 billion people driving 1 billion cars every day is going to have an effect on the environment.
Yes, as Topper points out, on a geological time scale it may even be insignificant for life on the planet but it is significant for the continuation of the human species with our present life style.
The earth will abide but they way its going life is going to suck for our descendants

Consider where the additional chemicals we put into the ecosystem actually go. On one hand you acknowledge severe pollution but then you do not take the next obvious step. It does not disappear or just silently slip into nothing. It becomes a part of the system, therefore changing the system in some way even if small. Now add up all these additions to our world, many of which are unhealthy even by your example, and we end up with an ongoing pouring of man made pollution into the earth, oceans, lakes and air. Is it reasonable to insist this will have no effect upon climate?griz wrote:Global warming and climate change is a hoax. I recommend you look into it further. Griz, these topics are too serious to blow off with referring to them as some kind of conspiracy or scam. In the 60's a book called Silent Spring was written by Rachel Carson. It was the birth of the environmental movement. Read it please. Also, remember everything is connected on our lovely planet. What happens in China will have some effect elsewhere. The oceans and lakes are dying of acidification. "Acid rain'? WTF?
Naysayers are everywhere. Someone on this thread, Per I think, used the example of the tobacco industry and its efforts to deny the U.S. Surgeon General's report. They had money at stake. Lots of it. Now it is generally accepted that smoking cigs is bad. I do not know if you have children but either way ask yourself if you want them to smoke.
The uncovering of hidden interests who are protecting money takes time and eventually even the dumb ass Republicans will come around if only to save their seats. It should not take a group of dead drowned Polar Bears washing up to convince us the ice is melting.
As to the idea all these climate shifts have happened before...sure they really have, but the time they occurred in was measured in centuries and millennia and not in years. Global warming is true by the definition of global temperatures rising. They have. Fact. The ocean is losing its ability to sustain coral and other important parts of its ecosystem. Fact. The ozone hole is getting bigger. Fact. Many lakes and rivers are polluted beyond salvage due to the toxic sludge at the bottom.
Here in NY where I live GE spent billions dredging the Hudson after being court ordered. They said it was not that bad but the court disagreed. Eventually they had to stop dredging due to the release of PCBs. Fish out of the lower Hudson are inedible though some eat them. Would you feed it to your kid?
This goes on and on. You often quote naysayers in your posts. Look into why they say nay and in many cases you will find money, just like big tobacco.
My degrees are not primarily science based though my undergraduate was mixed with arts and science. I spent a number of years in the geophysical exploration business and have always tried to stay current on what is up. I may not be the world's foremost expert on the environment but I have learned to pay attention to those who are. The vast majority of them say climate change is a real threat so I take their word because first, they know what they are talking about and second, they are not protecting great wealth as are groups like the fossil fuel industry who sponsor climate deniers.
In any case, the effects are going to be so obvious that no one will be left to deny except those who think the earth is flat and the moon landing staged. You can find many arguments for these ideas that can be cut and pasted into this thread but that does make them right. All you have to do to disprove the flat theory is watch a ship appear over the horizon as it climbs the curve.
