I generally like the Flames draft picks over the weekend, except for Joe Iginla. My buddies' grandson played with Joe when he was with the Oil Kings. He says that Joe will never be an NHLer. Got drafted because of the last name. Otherwise, good draft. Love the Flames future D, with Nemec, Praekh, Carels, Bahl as the top 4 with Brzustewicz (thank you Canucks for him ) and Kusnetsov as the bottom pairing. They just need to grab one of the top Centres and a winger or two in next year's draft and they are in really good shape.

No one gets the Joe Iginla pick. In fact, it was kind of a running joke yesterday. Other than that, though, you're right. Calgary had a pretty good day.

So in the last two days, the Panthers have acquired Schmid and Markstrom. Schmid's failure to develop is why the Devils got Markstrom. Markstrom followed up a decent year (in which his play was matched by his backup, Jake Allen) with a poor season last year, and there's a possibility that this wasn't just a bad year backing up a group of injured skaters in New Jersey, but an age-related decline (Marky is now 36 -- goalies are in it for longer, but this is goalie age decline range).

Is this their plan for the net? For every Skinner and Jarry there is a Hill and Andersen/Bussi. And then there's the midseason Colorado shuffle that can be a plan B.

If Bobo were a sure thing, it would be foolish to replace him with Marky and Schmid. But he's not a sure thing anymore, and this is what there is.

I just went through the FA list. Wow it really is a bad crop. If RJ stays patient I think he will find markets for Pettersson x 2, DeBrusk and potentially Boeser. Drew O’Conner is also drawing interest. While I’d rather keep him and flip him at TDD if the offer is right you move him now.

There maybe an opportunity to pick up some picks for the next 2-3 drafts and maybe a young prospect or two.

Reports that Werenski nixed a trade to Dallas. Details sketchy, but the centrepiece coming back to Columbus was Thomas Harley.

I still predict he goes nowhere until he can either resurrect his game or the buyout becomes palatable

He can't be bought out. Its all signing bonuses, and front end money. A classic fucked up contract. And, no. Retaining for 6 years is shooting our rebuild in the nuts. In years 5, we would have over $5 mil on buyouts, and just watch us have to dump an asset to fit under the cap, or miss a needed UFA. Buyouts and retained salary are like coke. You always need a little more.

Hence why the Canucks don’t want to retain on him but are willing to take back another bad contract.

Toronto has made some smart moves. I fear they might be good this year.

He looked alright in Carolina because they had a great D. The Oilers just got worse with the departure of Nurse and the addition of a couple of D men that aren't as good as Nurse. The only thing is that they have $8.5 million in cap space now. I'm confident that Bowman will overpay for players that aren't good enough to live up to the contracts they will get from the Oilers.
