Apparently the US has "substantial deposits of rare earth ore, in California, Alaska, Wyoming, Georgia, and Texas, among other places."

I posted a while ago, a youtube video simplified explanation of Ukraine geology and mineral wealth. Russia has concentrated on the oil, gas and coal regions having already seized much of it. These resources were developed during the Soviet era with largely Russian migrant workers, hence the regions strong ties back to Russia. West of that region is a very different geological province with iron mines. Combine iron and coal and you have steel.

There could be rare earths as a by-product in the iron ores. This is an ancient geological terrane similar to the Canadian Shield, Minnesota and Michigan.

I'd like to see a similar chart where the only homicides listed are strangers killing people, just the 'random' murders without gang violence.

Besides, whenever looking at "per 100k" - lower sample sizes will always have larger bias or skew to make the numbers look worse than they actually are when compared to larger sample sizes where this bias evens out.

Population of both Yukon and Nunavut are well below 100k combined, with a large bias towards First Nation populations which would likely explain the result.

Edit:

Alberta Homicides: 119 in 2022. Yukon: Zero.
BC in 2023 - 123, Yukon: 4.

Just as an example.

Btw, Lichtenstein has just under 40,000 inhabitants, so their 5.12 per 100k murder rate means two people got killed that year, and is probably a statistical outlier. Most years they are probably at 0, just as those other miniature countries in the beginning; the Vatican, Monaco, San Marino...

They are sandwiched between Switzerland, with a homicide rate of 0.60 and Austria with a rate of 0.88. If they themselves are in that same range they would average a murder every three years, but since the statistics look at a specific years, these tiny countries will always be misrepresented, either by being listed as 0.00 in most years, or getting a way too big number the years there actually is a murder, or in this case two of them.

Thanks Per, was just trying to explain that LOL, much better job.

The video doesn't seem to say what year(s) the data is from. Lichtenstein had 2 border guards killed in 1990. That must have spiked their numbers.

The Swedish figure is from 2023, which would probably be the most recent year you can get reliable statistics from.
My guess is that this would be the case with most of the countries, with maybe some of them lagging a year or two.
