In Germany, making a nazi salute in public is a criminal offence, punishable by fine or up to three years in prison, depending on the circumstances. Same in Austria. The German media is pretty shocked by Musk.
This Musk example is a terrific datapoint for why laws like Germany's are not a respite from, but a recipe for tyranny.
There is absolutely *no* context suggesting that Musk's gesture was intended to be or received to be a Nazi salute. None. I mean NONE. To believe it was is to be afflicted with either a terrible kind of hatred and/or psychological derangement. To say that it was this is to engage in a knowing slander. To speculate, "some people think that...." is to engage in the deepest and foulest kind of divisive trolling.
When RD does it, I know its trolling. But you, Per? Do *you* believe it enough to publish "Musk was making a Nazi salute?" Are your rational faculties so *destroyed*, your mind so *weak*, as to buy this pearl clutching propaganda?
Well, I saw him do it. There is no question in my mind that was a nazi salute, or as the fascists who invented it called it, a Roman salute. Now, Topper mentions photos of others doing the same thing, but those photos are typically just freeze frames of people with an out stretched arm. If you watch the video footage it is obvious that they are not making a Roman salute. NHL refs, at the start if the game, hold their arm in a similar fashion, but they are not making a Roman salute.
As I saw some British guy say ”there are basically two possible explanations, either Musk made a nazi salute or he is completely ignorant, and people keep telling me he is a genius”.
I think the general reaction here in Europe is that it was a nazi salute. But maybe you Americans live in another context and see it differently. Here it is not unusual that far right extremists do this salute. We are familiar with it from history, and we are familiar with it from the present as well. Giorgia Meloni, the current Italian PM has had to kick some prominent people out of her party for doing these salutes. It’s sensitive, because her party, Brothers of Italy, has its roots in the neo-fascist MSI (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_Social_Movement ) but want to distance themselves from their past. In her youth Meloni admired Mussolini, but she has later disavowed him.
Here’s a Canadian report on present day fascist salutes in Italy:

No European politician would make a hand gesture like that unless they were fascist or nazi. They would be well aware of how it would be received. Especially since it is still being used by fascists and neonazis till this day. But as I say, maybe the American context is different? I understand you originally did a similar gesture when pledging allegiance to the flag (which is another creepy thing to do, seen through European eyes). But maybe it is not as controversial in the US as it is in Europe.
The fact that Musk is a friend of Meloni and that he has endorsed the right wing extreme AfD in Germany does from a European perspective place him in a context where a nazi salute isn’t that farfetched, albeit still shocking. Add to that he was raised in apartheid South Africa, where racism was government policy and that his grandparents (according to Errol Musk) had nazi sympathies. Not to mention all the anti-semitic stuff he has shared on twitter. Walks like a duck, etc.
Tesla sales are now plummeting in Europe, and many stock holders are divesting from Tesla, SpaceX and other companies linked to Musk.
I include a sample of how it has been reported in Germany and France.

For years we've had so good spirited and rational (mostly) debates about the world. Its been fun, respectful, etc. But really, the world needs liberals like you to be better than useful idiots and call bull shit out when it is so transparent.
I truly enjoy reading your posts. We do not always see eye to eye, but I appreciate your intelligence, your wit and your reasoning. And I think it is important that we do not limit ourselves to just talking to those that agree with us. Getting to know other perspectives is always a good thing and helps us question things that otherwise been taken for granted.
But from my European perspective I have to agree with that British guy I saw on youtube. There are only two possible explanations. Either Elon knowingly made a nazi salute, or he is extremely ignorant. Sure, he could be trolling, but that still means he knew what he did.
And I repeat, no European politician would make that gesture by mistake. But maybe the American context is different.
