If $398 billion off (Trump) and $1.28 trillion off (Biden) is close, then we've bought into the idea that $400 billion here, $750 there doesn't really matter.

The context was (my own) question of whether Republicans or Democrats add more to the debt, and 8 trillion or so in both cases was ballpark enough for me to answer that question. I was looking all the way back to WW2 and at a high level neither party was more guilty than the other. Otherwise, of course, I'd agree a few $100B here or there does matter. The more glaring characteristic was the escalating debt in recent administrations, which you pointed out.

But more interesting is how off AI is. Its the great machine learning problem. Junk in, junk out. It isn't even at the trust but verify level yet.

For sure, AI is more mimicry than intelligence. You have to use it for what it's good for.

I tried rephrasing my query to ask AI to use the treasury data, but it still used data from USA Today and some other obscure sites. I could probably get it to work but I'm just starting to get into the practice of using the follow-up feature to refine my queries. I'm finding about 50% of the searches I used to do via Google or I now do with AI. It is incredibly useful for summarizing when I would normally browse multiple websites to get the information I need. I even use it for research when shopping.

So a big question here is why does this base information get into the USA Today? Where are there fact checkers? Arguably, you can define the deficit slightly differently (I used total US debt obligations from the treasury's website, and they've got a publicly available CSV file that tracks it daily), but the comparative deltas over time shouldn't be all that different so long as you are using the same measure for your before and after snapshot. At any rate, more mis- mal- dis- information from the mainstream media; but rest assured, if Harris is elected, Walz can be the misinformation czar and take care of it. Because, I'm pretty sure he said in the debate the other night (there was cross talk) that the First Amendment doesn't protect that (or hate speech) -- [it protects both].

Back to AI though -- this discussion (what's the contribution to the deficit) shows just how much machine learning has to do to sort to answer simple questions. When people talk about years in this context, you see articles that are using numbers relating to fiscal years (the FFY runs from Oct. 1 to Sept 30) without making that clear. You get polluted party propaganda (both side) in the information stream. AI has to have a way to sort the wheat from the chaff -- in a case like this, one might think that the treasury department is a pretty damn good source, but if you take the principle to far and apply it to all things, then the "reliable" information is what the government says. (This would be the world according to former New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern, who once famously said when she was PM that "unless you hear it from us [the government], its not the truth."). Yet we know that governments lie, deceive, spin, are sometimes just mistaken, or are just presenting one of a number of plausible explanations for phenomena. Government's have their own institutional strengths and biases that are baked in -- to be able to spot and account for that stuff, well, that's difficult, methods are contestable, etc.

ABC Whistleblower Affidavit Drops and YES, It Really Is a Bombshell if True

Here are some of the key points according to the whistleblower’s affidavit:

- ABC News was coordinating with Kamala Harris’ campaign far more than with Donald Trump’s campaign.

- They agreed to not ask questions on certain subjects that would have been detrimental to Harris. The same considerations were not offered to Trump, nor did his campaign ask for them.

- “Sample” questions were provided to the Harris campaign and not to Trump’s.

- Fact-checks on Donald Trump were required by the Harris campaign.

- Harris was not to face comparable fact-checks.

- Split-screen views were required to favor Harris.

It is noteworthy that the affidavit was signed, notarized, and mailed out BEFORE the debate. The fact that everything the whistleblower detailed appears to have happened makes this exceedingly damning.

So whatever happened with this so-called affidavit? More right-wing BS that faded once the job of misinformation was done. Thanks to MJT, Bill Ackman, and other Republicans who retweeted the "story".

What was the purpose of notarizing the affidavit? The notary only confirms the signature is authentic, so what's the point if the whistleblower doesn't reveal their identity? Just something to make it sound official to their cult.

Did the secret recordings get released? Nope. Was any evidence whatsoever brought forward?

Didn't Republicans want the whistleblower to testify before Congress? I guess nobody cared after the story had run its course.
