Are you comparing Demko to a DeLorean?
None of the specific cars I squeezed that last few 10s of thousands of kms out of would be a fair comparison, because none of them were ever great cars, and at his peak, Demko was one of the top 3 goalies in the world.
I'd say at this point we'd be talking Lotus, or maybe an Alfa Romeo.

47% 2nd or 3rd round eh?
We will take the 3 "all the ways" as false bravado.
I admire the early season confidence.
donlever wrote: ↑Sun Oct 05, 2025 4:01 pm
To be fair 24% stated all the way.
So there is that.
Canuck fan surveys should be asterisked.

I am on par with this pretty much Dude.
There are a lot of IFS with respect to the Canucks (I suppose true of many (all?) teams but it seems more prevalent with respect to us.....but....we are so solid back end, Hughes I think will take another step forward...Foote I think is the right coach...so...IF Demko...IF EP40...IF Special Teams...IF Lekkerimaki...IF Kane....I can see us in the post season.
I do not see the 2nd 3rd round success others predict however.

I'm glad you pulled a Doc out of the DB there...
No attack on Corn's previous hopeful post, but I was thinking... man, that's a lot of IFs.
But I see you also had doubts going into this season.
I kind of wish I got back into the spirits earlier because I see that during the preseason poll, a lot of CC was ingesting mushrooms... because, no offence to anyone, that's pretty fuckin' delusional.

I blame Cuz.
A Datsyukian team he tagged them as I recall.
(....plus he supplied the 'shrooms...)

Honestly, I think this team will weakly fight for a wild card spot - enough that no assets will leave to improve the team in the future.
Injuries suck, but we deep down know that Chytil and Demko were not going to survive the season. I'm not sure many of us thought it would be this early.
Losing Hoglander, Blueger, and Forbert just meant that our depth players got replaced with AHL guys that water down the whole lineup.

Honestly, I thought there was a shot that, with a carefully managed load, Demko could play enough to help.
(This would be analogous to going ahead and replacing the water pump, just to have the fuel pump go a few months later.)
And there have been occasions -- relatively rare, I admit -- where players who had a concussion history finally bit the bullet and took enough time off to actually heal up all the way, and then don't get concussed every time they are bumped, anymore. I thought Chytil might have done that.

It might be a question of interpretation, but I didn't see that response as predicting 2nd round success. I thought it meant that they could win 1 round, and thereby make the 2nd round.
There's no way to be certain how alternate histories might have unfolded, but if all of the IFs had come up favourably, I still think that would have been possible.
But in retrospect, it was foolish to predict that as a probable outcome. If all of the IFs really were 50/50, and Don listed 5 (I think there were actually more) then (0.5)^5 = 0.03125, or a 1 in 32 chance of winning one round.
The Canucks don't have a monopoly on bad luck, though. It's a fast, poorly-officiated, contact-intensive league, and a couple of the teams ahead of them could suffer injuries that are, by the end of the season, just as deleterious, or worse. Not that I'm hoping for that.

What response?
The poll (as you can see only 2 realists exist here...

)

Hehe, no ill intent, my good Corn.
Positivity is always good.
There's been a lot more healthy, reasonable, respectful discussion here lately and I can still interject with some awful puns.. part of the reason I've participated more again.
Not that it wasn't fun and more interesting before with the characters and massive trolling. We can stay interested in different, more civil ways I guess because...

That's how I imagined it, and how I voted (based on winning at least 1 round).
With the current season 25% over, I might be making adjustments™

I am a sports fan with high expectations I believe I picked a 2nd/3rd round appearance.
I thought Lankinen could hold the fort if Demko was injured, still need to see
Chytil - expected him to be injured but never really counted on him for the entire season
D - thought it was good enough to win those 2 - 1 games
Seems I was wrong in many assumptions.
Edit - I am also a grumpy oldish man.

I watched some of the jersey Florida game before this one began.
I have to say that if Nemec is part of the return, we could definitely do worse in a Hughes trade. The kid is a beauty

Wow, I just found out Noah Dobson was traded to MTL for 1st round picks. I guess when you win the 1st overall and know you're going to pick a top-rated Dman, it makes sense?
What was the general thoughts of this around these here parts? What do you all think about their 16th and 17th picks?
Schaefer seems pretty studly already.
LOL, I completely stopped paying attention to hockey until recently.

I understood the trade from both teams perspectives.
To lazy to expand on that right now.
Not sure I'm sold on Dobson being a 9.5 guy though.
I suppose makes more sense as the cap continues to grow.
As far as the picks go they are interesting as they immediately follow Cootes.
Eklund apparently has wheels and pace and hounds the puck.
There was Canuck talk around this player.
But pick 17...well, this could be some pick...Kashawn Aitcheson....big kid who plays D with that Brian Burke belligerence.
Look him up.
