Just saw the Draisaitl contact.

I won't complain about Scooter's hit again for a while.

Draisaitl's best year was two seasons ago and he potted 128 points.....it coincided with McDavid's massive breakout to 153 points.

Other than that season he has never recorded more than 110 points.....while playing with McWonderkid. Perimettersson has proven he can score a mere 8 points shy of that with minimal help.

Next year around this time we will either hear that McDavid has signed for an AAV of $17M or the rumors will be circulating that he wants out of Coilerville.

This is a huge season for the oil. Need to go on a deep run again or McJesus might say, "fuck, it" I want out.

rikster wrote: Tue Sep 03, 2024 6:21 am Doc, are you saying that the interest payment is not included when calculating the cap hit?
Yes, exactly, but remember, this is an analogy...

rikster wrote: Tue Sep 03, 2024 6:21 am If so, wonder why paying the bonus up front doesn't have the same benefit, only in that case by reducing the cap hit?

A future value discount...
Neither has a “benefit”… they are the same.

In the analogy $7M today = $10M in 9 years.

Therefore, the cap hit should be the same in both cases.

The value of both contracts are the same.

5thhorseman wrote: Tue Sep 03, 2024 6:48 am I had a similar thought. Why would the cap hit calculation use the Net Present Value of the bonus while salary is treated as face value? Is this specifically stated in the CBA?
I was not differentiating between bonus and salary.

Twas simply an analogy designed to show why deferred money contracts do not amount to “cap circumvention”.

As I said, the mob was screaming dat dere when this story initially broke (probably still are).

Bouchard is gone for his next contract.

I fully expect the Oilers to sign Bouchard to at least $10 million plus on his next contract. I think Mcduffus will get somewhere between $15 million to $16 million. Plus you have a vastly overpaid Nurse at $9.5 million. So they will eat up around $50 million of the cap for those 4 players. So, they will fill out the roster with scrubs, which isn't going to help them when the going gets tough in the playoffs.

The only upside is that if one of those guys go on LTIR, they will have a lot of cap space to try and remedy the problem.

Surely McDavid won't take anything less of 16m per.

Bouchard is the tricky one. A 50% raise is 6mil, 100% is 8 mil. Maybe 8 x 8 will get it done? Even then that would be him taking up 80% of the salary cap space they have for next season, assuming it stays at around 10 mil. Let's assume there would be a 2 mil raise (now making their expected cap space $12 mil) in the cap for the following season, the oil would still need to sign at least 5 more players to fill out their roster with no more than 4 mil of cap space left over. Which would only give them a 21 man roster. Yikes, they better win it all this year.

I was being conservative with my estimate, but you are correct -McD won't take less than $16 million per season.

While I used $17M as the number in my post I was meaning that to be his minimum commanded salary. If McDavid wants to win a Cup he could pull a Crosby.

However, iirc, it was rumoured that Crosby held some animosity towards Malkin when the latter held out for max dollars a year or two after Crosby took less to build a winner. Draisaitl definitely did not give Edmonton a hometown discount.

I think the Oil need to add whatever sweeteners they have to... to dump Nurse next year.

2 first rounders... 3??

Doesn't matter that he's McDave's best pal, business is business.

Extend McDink first though.

I can't see Bouchard taking less than Nurse. He will get $10, or more.

GM's around the league should hate the Nurse contract. It was bar altering for all the wrong reasons.
