I assume the conviction had to do with sedition or something based upon the date of 1776.

The Founding Fathers of the US of A were seditious traitors to their (at the time) recognized governing authority, the British Monarchy. Sure, they were in the colony that was the Americas, but nonetheless, they took criminal action against an unjust system of elitist oppression of the common man. Ultimately they created their own elites that slowly became what America (and the globalists) is today.

But you cannot dismiss the fact that almost every major change that has come to any imperialistic system has involved citizens becoming, by definition, criminals.
