In a nutshell, the NHL suspected foul play, reported to the Nevada Gaming Comision, SportsNet canned Marek immediately, the NGC investigates. Marek was tipping off Siegel, Siegel was tweeting the teams draft choices before the league made them public. The NGC has yet to find any further evidence of foul play, ie. illegal sports betting.

Marek risked his career and reputation for absolutely nothing. Didn’t benefit any financial gain (allegedly), while sacrificing everything.

He essentially receives a 5 min major, game misconduct and indefinite ban, for a harmless love tap.

Are you saying the punishment doesn't fit the crime because the damage was limited?
Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

The punishment appears to have been set to lay down a precedent and negate temptations for others to do the same (or similar) in the future.

Therefore the parallel between perceived depth of crime versus actual response, to me, is moot

If the Vegas bookies thought they had lost money from this insider info on gambling, their response would be a lot less subtle, and a lot more permanent.

I've never liked Marek much, but some Merican network probably hires him on eventually...

It is an abuse of inside information with a league that just began courting official gambling channels.

Verges on a legal and PR nightmare. That could have shut down a lucrative revenue stream for the league and teams. Zero Tolerance.

Shane Pinto got 1/2 a season for non hockey related gambling.

If they find someone was betting on it, they will roast him to set the precedent.

[edit] and I agree with Tciso… if it’s the bookies that find out first, AND they lost money, Marek will suffer. Those fucks still believe in FAFO.

Insider info long having been a part of the hockey competition for eyeballs, it was a matter of time before someone was made an example of.

“Jeff is a great advocate of diversifying the voices that talk about the sport,” said Dave Cadeau, the former director of programming at Sportsnet Radio. “He really appreciated the value that it can bring to the conversation.”

Maybe he can find solace in his position being more diverse.

I say let the NHL goons police this part of hockey. Can we see if he is tougher than Steve Moore? 1 shot from #44 would put him in his place. Or, maybe Semenko can be in a commercial with Gretzky. :D

It seems like Marek has been leaking draft floor info to Seidel for a few years now. Could he have been dumb enough to have failed to consider how this sort of thing isn't just harmless fun anymore? He doesn't strike me as someone dumb enough to have failed to consider how the NHL's new relationship with legal betting might make this sort of thing inadvisable? Hmm.

I happen to think it's going to be a costly lesson for him though. More costly than some of you realize, I would say. I don't know what Jeff Marek is going to do for a living now but whatever it is I'm confident it won't be in or around the pro hockey industry. He's been doing this stunt with Seidel for long enough now (this guy is an excellent talent evaluator and draftnik and someone I have followed for a while now btw) that alert hockey nerds would have been onto it long ago and wagering based on these leaks is almost certain to have occurred.

Maybe he goes back to his pro wrestling journalism roots? Does he finish up his English PHD? Or, maybe Seidel can get him an OHL scouting gig?

I wonder if this sort of thing had anything to do with the league moving away from hosting the draft live in an arena next year?

Not at all.

I could see if he was leaking info for financial gain, high risk high reward. In his case, he gave out info without any personal gain whatsoever. Now he’s completely fuct over his career and security.

If your gonna risk taking a penalty, make it count!
