10 forwards
Louie- 6
Brock- 5.75
Bo- 5.5
Miller- 5.25
Sutter- 4.35
Pearson- 3.75
Ferland- 3.5
Roussel- 3
Beagle- 3
Petey- .925
4 d men
Edler- 6
Myers- 6
Benn- 2
Hughes- .917
One goalie
Demko- 1.050
15 guys on the roster. Need 7 skaters and a goalie.
Dead space to:
Roberto- 3.033
Spooner- 1.033
Sven- 2.3
At total of 63,508,000 approximately on the books for next year. Hughes and Petey are due some sizeable bonuses that could tripple their contracts. Virtanen and Gaudette need to be re-upped( 3 and 1.5 seems conservative for them).
Marky and Tanev will want between 5 -6 each then you still need another two D men and two more forwards. I don’t see it.
Bonuses for Hughes and petey top out at a total of 1.8 more. Brings you to 65.3 mil.
If Tanev and Marky get 5.5 each, you have spent 76 million. Need a couple defenceman (rafferty and a bench warmer, both ELC), and 3 forwards (mcEwen, Lind, hoglander, madden, etc, also all ELC). That's another 5ish million.
New total is about 81-82 million. If the cap goes to 85 million, we have between 3-4 million of cap space to improve.
Can you see it now?
Cap magically shoots up 4 million, no Gaudette and Virtanen. They may combine for 4.5 - 5 million

Working with those paid out bonuses and $65.3M.....so $18M in space (I wouldn't bank on $85M)
Spend $11M on Tanev and Markstrom.
$7M in space.
Virtanen will be asking for $3.5M minimum, and frankly the way he's been treated here in Van (whether rightly or wrongly I don't care, his agent will) you can bet the ask will be closer to $4M. It's quite conceivable that Jake finishes the season north of 20 goals and 45 points.....in that even the ask goes up. But for now let's just say $4M.
$3M in space.
Gaudette will almost certainly be in the $2M range. He's 23, and with some inconsistent linemates he's producing above 0.5 ppg in role that sees him move between the top and bottom 6.
$1M in space.
12 forwards, 6 D, 2 G.....
$1M in space.
The cap has to go up for us to have the kind of room that we probably need.
And free agents won't be coming here a-plenty because we can't offer them much in the way of term with the raises due Petey and Hughes.

Question...have we ever heard Benning mention that he wants to resign Tanev? I mean comparable to how he did regarding markstrom
I haven't ever heard anything like that out of him but I dont listen to his interviews and shit like you all do living local

Not a peep.
I actually am of the opinion that Tanev won't be back next season, and wasn't in the forecast beyond this year at any time.
In today's NHL puck movement is king. Tanev is probably among the best defenders in the league when it comes to positional awareness and reading the play in his own zone. He's also a slightly above average skater.....particularly in the defensive zone specialist department.
He possesses a very sub par shot. No one-timer or one-touch pass to speak of. Average playmaking and puck control. I suspect that Benning could do better for less than the > $5M that will almost surely be the ask. I also think that his durability makes him a prime candidate to move on from.
All that being said.....Benning is on record saying he doesn't want to do anything that might disrupt the chemistry in the room that this group has built.

I’d love to see the better than Tanev D man they could land for under 5 million. Just this last summer he paid 6 million for an inferior player. I’m curious if this under 5 million dollar d man will be a great partner for Quinton Hughes.

Pretty simple - rotate Ferland, Sutter, Beagle, Roussel, Sven through LTIR throughout the season.
Or, trade one of Sven or Sutter or have Ferland/Loui retire, and bingo.

The silence says it all i think. Tanev was one of those toilet kids who loved the laughs and possibly has made JB aware privately of his intentions to go home to spoon with johnny pjs.
The only wrench in the gears of our conspiracy theory is jimmy saying he doesnt want to fuck with chemistry...

Do basically Tanev could go from $4.5 to $5.5 or $6.5. About a $1 to $1.5 million raise
Markstrom could go from $3.6 million to $5.5 to $6 million about a $2 to $2.5 million raise
Worst case scenario the both combined get $4 million in raises to a best case scenario of $3 million in combined raises
Is that really that difficult? I don’t think so.
I have a feeling Stecher is getting blown out for picks or prospects or an expiring UFA contract and they will try to make a mean nothing hockey trade with Baertschi this deadline and 2020-21 UFA’s - Edler, Pearson and Sutter are left walk next season but they might be able to find a taker for Sutter, if they do it won’t happen at the deadline - Playoffs baby! To be honest the only deadline trade I see this year is a hockey trade involving Baertschi.
Worst case scenario they have to trade out Markstrom next season and run with Demko to make room for Hughes and Petey contracts
I see no issues

Nice try but Blob only sees what he wants to see.
The cap IS projected to rise to around $85M.
Rafferty WILL replace Stecher.
Loui, Sven, and Sutter won't be on the roster.
Tanev won't get much more than he gets now (or he'll be gone).
TONS of cap space...

They will both make between 5 and 6. How much depends on term.
Probably true Doyle, but I have my doubts that it will be on the same team.
That’s what I figure. But then we were told the team would have loads of cap space.
You should kiss the feet and lick the asshole of whoever told you that.

How will they deal Loui, Birdbones, Sven and Sutter? No teams would take those losers for a dirty diaper. They are ALL negative value. So I assume we are taking back cap and term. You’ve really figured it out

He hasn't said anything in public BUT...
I have a source who says Tanev will walk if he wants much more than he makes now.
Personally I think Tanev will want to test the market, but that's just me.
Of course folks don't have to believe me when I say I have a source...
