BCExpat wrote: Sat Nov 01, 2025 10:51 am I spend a lot of time in my shop, as I have taken up finish carpentry/millwork as a hobby. I've been building stuff like desks, wall units, head boards and as of this summer, I started building live edge wood/epoxy river tables. Also, I have a lot of antique furniture, some of which needed restoration. I completely restored my roll top desk, which was a challenge, but it looks great now.
Exactly what I'm doing, it takes time, as its not my full time job obviously. But working on a room at a time in my place. Desks, tables, millwork for laundry room etc.

A really relaxing way to spend time after work.
Yeah, I really look forward to the afternoons in my shop - music on, just taking my time doing something I enjoy.

Epoxy is expensive holy hell. I like those pieces you made XP. What wood did you make the desk out of? I like it

Donny that looks wicked cool. I like how the modern chairs contrast the natural dark live edge slab. I'd love that set up too

Those are both nice BCE.....What type of wood did you use for the wall entertainment unit?

JelloPuddingPop wrote: Sat Nov 01, 2025 12:35 pm You are totally right on the opinions on these things - even down to if using spray foam is OK, some people say at sauna temps, it'll start off-gassing nasty stuff. Looking at the enviro label - seems to me you'd be a dried up husky before that happens. Hard to say. But I won't be running power to it. Wood fired all the way.
Had to use 2lb vapour barrier closed cell spray for the ceiling as we built the sauna as an addition under an existing deck. The deck had no existing purlin cross strapping to create cross venting that is required if using fibreglass batt for ceiling insulation. The deck would have rotted big time quickly. In Vancouver 2lb closed cell is the only option you have if ceiling above is an exterior assembly with no existing cross venting.

Long lasting off gassing is only a problem if the installer is installing improperly. Happens when they spray to thick in passes. Supposed to spray in max layers and allow for the first pass to cure before applying again. My insulation contractor is meticulous, a real pro. 2lb closed cell is like concrete when cured. 2lb also comes with vapour barrier where is the open cell half pound doesn’t come with a vapour barrier. You have to spray vapour barrier paint on after, which can be a problem if done incorrectly.

But the sauna foil and air gap between cedar and framing goes a long way in preventing problems.

For the entertainment centre - I just used 2 x 6 spruce framing material. Absolutely critical to get straight wood and to dry it out for a few months before use. I bit jointed 3 - 2 x 6 together to make all the sides, shelves etc.

For the desk all the wood except for the live edge stuff, is fabricated from 2 x 4 and 1 x 4 spruce. Not sure what type of wood the live edge stuff is - I got it from a friend of mine that had a bunch of it piled up by his shed.

Seems like a right complicated mess! You sound like a knowledgeable, competent GC Chef - glad there are still some good ones down there. Lots of shady flippers in the Lower Mainland.

Keep up the good work man!

Hargraves would kill someone if he had to drive to Fancouver everyday. Assholes everywhere blowing their horns and driving their faggoty Teslas. On Grandview Highway, how hasn't someone stoved one of those big Oak Trees that encroach on the road? What a fucking eyesore. Some guy running around buck naked with a bunch of goods in a shopping cart higher than a kite.

Peachland will welcome a much happier and peaceful Doyle as he meanders through the last 5-8 years of his life. I'm going to go pound the hired help at the Ramada in Kelowna again.
