CC Random thread

The primary goal of this site is to provide mature, meaningful discussion about the Vancouver Canucks. However, we all need a break some time so this forum is basically for anything off-topic, off the wall, or to just get something off your chest! This forum is named after poster Creeper, who passed away in July of 2011 and was a long time member of the Canucks message board community.

Come on Chef - it isn't going to happen, at least not a full take over. However, we should be looking at a much closer relationship with the USA - more like becoming a protectorate of the USA. So we will still have our own government, health care, etc. With much closer ties to the USA and for the protection they could offer us, especially in the north, I would be all for it.
Isn't that what NATO is for?
What is NATO going to do when China or Russia start encroaching on what they consider disputed territory? If we are a protectorate of the USA, they would not allow it. I don't really trust NATO to help Canada with any disputed territory in the north.
Before Trump it would be a no brainer. Afaik he is the first and only leader of a Nato country who has suggested he would not honour article 5 which states that all Nato countries must assist a member that is attacked.
I believe his proposal is that the US would withdraw from NATO. So it’s not like they wouldn’t be honouring article 5…..it just wouldn’t apply to them as a non-member country.
Somewhere in NW BC trying (yet again) to trade a(nother) Swede…..

Is that because I love Catholicism or hate Catholicism?

Sorry, I can't keep up with your latest Strangelove theory.

Am I still English? Am I still orange?

Nevermind, I'll wait for the book...

No, not at all. I think you’ll really enjoy the twist at the end. The movie in fact gives hope for religion and the changes it needs to make to “get with the times” or to get closer to humanity.

Over the Internet, you can pretend to be anyone or anything.

I'm amazed that so many people choose to be complete twats.

In The God Delusion, Dawkins contends that a supernatural creator, God, almost certainly does not exist, and that belief in a personal god qualifies as a delusion, which he defines as a persistent false belief held in the face of strong contradictory evidence.

"A designer God cannot be used to explain organized complexity because any God capable of designing anything would have to be complex enough to demand the same kind of explanation in his own right.“

RD, just because you don’t believe in a god does not make it less important for others. I am not an overtly religious person, used to go to church because it made me feel good.

I actually don’t believe in everything in the bible since it was written by man and a group of old dudes sat around to determine what goes into it.

But when my soul needs a little energy I find solace in the faith I have.

I don’t like anyone using a book to indicate their way is the only way and that happens in majority of the organized religions. No one should die because of a religious book.

I respect the sentiment, 2Fingers, but this italicized part I wanted to comment on. Religions are comprised of a generally identifiable set of ideas, but not all generally identifiable sets of ideas are religious. But all sets of ideas, religious or not, that have the power to persuade, motivate, provide purpose, can kill lots and lots of people. I've never thought the claim "religion leads to war" was very instructive because it stops at the wrong level of generality. It makes people conclude organized religion is bad. But it isn't a shared belief in God (or Gods) practiced in an organized fashion that creates the destruction. It is ta belief in the righteousness of an ideology, combined with a ethic that ends justify means, shared and acted upon by groups. Each religion is just one set of ideas that can fit this mode; some religions far more easily than others (depending on how contradictions are resolved). But atheist or occultist philosophies contain powerful ideas, outside of organized religion, that can lead to great death and destruction. In fact, the greatest (see USSR, Nazi Germany, Pol Pot, Maoist China).

On the other hand, sets of ideas, manifested by groups, can have the power to save and improve lives.

I respect that, 2 Fingers: I was baptized but wops like us do baptisms for one reason only - the wine, antipasto, salami, mortadella, cheese, olives, biscotti and espresso’s. We never spent a minute in church unless it was for baptisms, weddings and funerals in which nowadays nobody does that anymore. Baptisms are gone, weddings are not in church’s anymore (justice of the peace) and funerals are a celebration of life held at legion halls.

Religion is a personal choice where discussion and debate for or against rarely ends amicably or with any sort of resolution.

It always gets someone going I've noticed.

Religion is a moral compass, not a substitute for scientific understanding.
