Re: CC Random thread
I would add that $70 million is actually not a lot for a very large company. There are companies that make billions in profit. However, the absolute number is meaningless without more context. $1B on profit could be quite reasonable for a large company, while a small company could be gouging its customers to make $70M.UWSaint wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 1:41 pmDo you know that those companies combine to employ 544,000 people, meaning that if Reich's numbers you report are correct, the average "profit" earned by the company per employee is $128? Workers of the world unite!!!!Chef Boi RD wrote: ↑Wed Dec 18, 2024 1:16 pmOh yeah, a socialist to the bone. This would result in the five largest grocery stores getting a $1.7 billion dollar tax cut. Some populist, hey?” - Robert Reich
“General Electric, General Motors, Meta, Tesla, T-mobile had a combined $70 million in profits last year. Yet they paid an effective average tax rate of just 6.9%. Meanwhile the typical American family pays a tax rate of 13.6%” - Robert the Reich!
So how do you measure profitability? On a per share basis. If, for example, company X makes $1B in profit, and there are 100 million shares outstanding, then there is $10 in profit per share. If a share is worth $200, then the return on that share is $10/$200 = 5%, not too shabby but also not great. So by extension the $1B profit is not outrageous.

I do admit I enjoy playing the devils advocate around here, the contrarian with little to no political acumen whatsoever and nor do I care to have. I’m just dumbfounded by how Trump has managed to convince the “little guy” that Billionaires are people too and deserve a hug and need all the help they can get.

Walk in to Target, buy a Bible, and a 12 pack of Busch then hit Appleby’s to begin my path to Christ, obesity and bitching about LGBTQ and Mexicans.

Nobody buys just a '12 pack' of Busch (Light) down here. The 30 packs are standard.Chef Boi RD wrote: ↑Thu Dec 19, 2024 8:07 am Walk in to Target, buy a Bible, and a 12 pack of Busch then hit Appleby’s to begin my path to Christ, obesity and bitching about LGBTQ and Mexicans.
