They don’t need to, Sprong’s nothing but a placeholder for Lekkerimaki

I'd bet my net worth Sprong at 5.5x2 in Vancouver doesn't happen next year.
I'll bet he isn’t worth it either. Guys who consistently make $1 mil don't usually get the big contracts. Teams know that those players are too inconsistent for big contracts.

Maybe he plays with Petty and pulls an Anson Carter.

If he's still a 12 minute, 2nd PP 20 goal, 40 point guy but is able to be more self aware over 200 feet a mutually fair deal could perhaps be had.
If he scores 30, say with Petey as Wids suggests, he is gone for $$$ somewhere else and these boys will slot in JL or another filler in the spot if he is not ready.
Imesho.

Well Kuz + 1st + 4th + Brzustewicz + Jurmo... for rental Lindholm.
Would've been better off not signing Kuz to that $5.5M x 2.
Butt hind sight is 20/20.
If Kuzzy was scoring @ a 40G pace though like his first year here and when he arrived in CowTown, that would be a contract most teams would happily take on. Heck, if he was scoring at that pace, Tocc would have overlooked his defensive liabilities and still played him regularly with EP40 and first unit PP.
We wouldn't have to give up that king's ransom in the trade for Lindholm as well, Kuzzy + 2nd round pick for EL23 would prob do it. Although, I'm sure Calgary would prefer a package of picks/prospects, so instead we give them Mikheyev:
Mikheyev65 +1st + 4th + Brzustewicz + Jurmo... for rental LIndholm.
I'd much rather do that deal.
It would have bolstered our playoff chances for success as well. Petey still has a winger (Kuz) who can score and help him produce. EL23 just anchors the 3rd line playing his strong 2-way game. I know, kinda hypothetical. Maybe in a parallel universe, this happened and we won a Cup.

X-box dood! X-box!
It'll interesting to see if Kuzzy96 can keep that scoring pace next season. If so, Calgary will be easily be able to flip him for another truck load return b4 TDD.

Sprong seems like Gagner, Grabner and (maybe) Zadorov. Guys who have good seasons, and then sign contracts that they never play up to. If Sprong springs for 50 or 60 points, some other GM can over pay him. The odds he suddenly developes into a well rounded player are slim. Let him have a good season, and tarana or Columbus can over pay him as his warts come back.
I think moving on from 1 season wonders is probably one of the harder things GMs need to do.

I think the fact that both management and Tocchet have worked with Sprong and believe he can be a more impactful player within this system is encouraging.
This could realistically be Sprongs last NHL contract before heading over seas, he knows he’s at a crossroads in his career and this could be his best opportunity to take his game to the next level.
The dude has an impressive skill set, if he can adapt to Tocc’s system, this could be a shrewd move for both parties.

Problem with players like Sprong is when asked to play a more focused two way game the offence suffers, we’ve seen this story before. Tempered expectations is advised.
