Big player....6'2" 215 lbs.

Physical.

Skates like the wind.
He's Drew O'Connor without the penalty killing prowess.

Maybe more physical, maybe even dumber in terms of offensive IQ.

File it in the "next Kiefer Sherwood" box which was formerly the "next Dakota Joshua" box. Again, he doesn't really kill penalties, but the idea is that you sign him as a fourth liner, with energy (and in his case, quite a bit of speed), and maybe you unlock something a little more by finding a fit somewhere.

I rag on guys like this for their Virtanen brains, but when the guy is down the lineup, I actually think there's really a lot to like about how the bottom 6 can be composed. Really fast guys who are also good on the wall -- those are great attributes in the bottom 6.

If he plays like he did last year, that's all right. But he has a history of hot-cold, and the Red Wings are doing nothing but extending their stay in purgatory. Poor Mo Seider and Lucas Raymond, wasting their best years.....

To the Phantoms, I am sure.

I hope he figures it out.

He won't.

Should have never sped him into the AHL.

EDIT: Remember, he went from a nothing junior league where he was the best in the bunch, he was always going to be a high risk of failure player, but the knock on him besides "we don't know how he fares against stronger competition" was that he didn't think the game at a high level. The idea that he'd be thrown into the AHL instead of learning the game in progressively faster leagues was player development malpractice. Of course he did nothing but try to do everything himself. Its all he could process.

Yeah, immediately thought Sherwood circa 26/27 when seeing this.

But.

He fits the "new mold" of size and pace at forward this NFG regime appears to desire.

I don't mind the signing at all.

He and Schenn year 1 NFG July 1 represent decent value for where we are headed in the current time frame.

As a 6-7 (hopefully usually 7 because Mancini's not terrible), I like it. I am hard on Schenn because I can't stand defensemen who can't transition the puck well. (Schenn can make some bomb passes, but he takes too long to find the play to move the puck and thus is a glass chipper). But as a PO Joseph replacement? I like this. I like his physicality, and while we never have perfect information about personalities, from what we know, he strikes me as exactly the kind of veteran that you want to have around.

Already more moves than I was expecting, and no complaints.

Are they actually building a team that will "be hard to play against "?

@UW.....and experience/leadership.

He and Gallagher will serve the Buiums/Willanders/Ohgrens/Sushis/Cootes of the world well.

Edler is the Klimovich comp. He's drafted from a 3rd rate Swedish league. The Canucks were really high on the guy -- I remember they traded next season's third for the third round pick they took him with because they had a whiff that Detroit (IIRC) also had a bead on this largely unscouted kid.

And what did that regime do with Edler? They brought him over to play in the CHL first. Maybe even as an overager (but I don't have a great memory on that detail). He ramped up his game processing and went on to be a Canucks staple for a decade.
