The cheese is making a nation vs nation tournament but NHL only. This means that McDavid will be up against Ekholm.....do you think Ekholm is gonna see 97 on the sleeve of the jersey and still go as hard into the boards as he would if this was summer tournie?

It’s going to an all-star game meets the Harlem globetrotters. I do expect the Americans to be passionate as they are always wanting to prove something - the whole red, white and blue thing. Team Canada will probably phone it in as they are slowly becoming the hockey version of England’s National Men’s soccer Team, where the passion for international play just ain’t quite there.

I miss the Canada Russia battles of old. That was always the top rivalry for us growing up

My understanding is that since very few North American players have any experience of international hockey since there hasn’t been participation in the Olympics for some time, the NHL/USA/Canada wanted this as a dress rehearsal for next year’s Olympic tournament.
And both Finland and Sweden will go full throttle. The players take immense pride in playing for their country.

And again, mods, shouldn’t this be in the International Hockey section of the board?

They wouldn’t.

The NHL wanted to include Russia. Sweden, Finland and Czechia made it clear that none of them would participate if Russia was invited.
As soon as the last Russian soldier has left Ukraine they can participate again.

So you think that Ekholm will take a full on run at McDavid as he 97 drives the net and risk concussing his Oiler superstar teammate in order to win it for the Blue and Gold?

It is an NHL event, not an IIHF tournament. Only NHL players…..so it can stay here or go there. I doubt it matters.

Czechia doesn’t have enough NHL players to ice a competitive roster. So who cares what they think.

But again, it is an NHL event. Host the tournament and just call them teams Red, Blue, Yellow, White, and Black. Fuck the politics. I guarantee you the players wouldn’t sit out. Or are there NHL player refusing to step on the ice with Ovechkin when Washington is in town?
