Well gilly traded away a lot of picks in pursuit of a Stanley Cup championship, plus when he did draft he went after "talent" a lot like Ricky Schroeder, and

under Gillis, the Canucks have leaned heavily on the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Europe for draft picks, devoting 14 of their 30 selections to those areas the last five years.

Thank goodness Gilman changed the structure in our scouting and draft strategies late in Gillis tenure (before he got let go), that coupled with Benning acquiring picks and all of a sudden our prospect cupboard is stacking up!

Canucks 06 draft only produced the butter soft Michael Grabner so that can be lumped in as weak too . Even going back to 05 with the blunder of passing on Kopitar it appear as though management and the scouting staff was asleep at the wheel

He made sure he got the head shot in. Just as bad as the Neal knee to the head I'd say. Went out of his way to accidentally on purpose get the head.

Didn't Hansen get 2 games for a somewhat similar play against Hossa?

Nothing similar imo, Hansen isn't that kind of player. He was legitimately going for the puck. Problem is, Hossa's had a history of concussions & a melon as durable as an egg. If it had been any other player on the receiving end ( other than Crosby) there's prob no suspension. I think he got one game.

Marchand's actions here are intentional & w/ his wrap sheet he should get 3+ reg season games.

The guy only had a handful more goals that Chris Higgins and one more goal than Nick Bonino last season...calling the Ryan deal a massive overpayment would be an understatement.

Don't think you can reasonably make that comparison

Ryan struggled with injuries last year, and saw his minutes when compared to his run during 2009 - 20012, but still produced a respectable 56 point pace

In the prior 5 seasons, he's averaged 33 goals and 64 points, with the lowest totals being a pro-rated 53 points in the lockout year - heights Higgins has hit once and Bonino has never hit.

Ryan's also brings an element of power and skill that those other two don't. Plus he's only 27, whereas Bonino is starting his third full NHL season at 26

Ryan's contract is in line with the front line winger UFA market - as are Higgins (solid journeyman third liner) and Bonino (unproven RFA, signed early in breakout season, etc)

Ryan Johansen signs with CBJ. He gets 3M per in the first 2 years and in year 3 he has the option of accepting 6M qualifying offer for 1 season and become UFA or he can sign an extension. Due to the 3rd year QO, the AAV for his contract is 4M per season.

edit- That's how I understand the details from twitter anyways.

No longer have optional years. He will get 3, 3, 6. After that Columbus needs to qualify him at 6 million or he becomes UFA. If they qualify him, which they will do, they can take him to arbitration but he remains RFA.

A good bridge deal. He averages 4 per for three years, still some RFA status left at the end of term. Sets himself up nicely for a minimum of six+ per moving forward while Columbus gets good cap and good salary for the first two years.

All in all both sides win with this deal.
