I do think there's an element of jealousy/inferiority complex at play when it comes to the leaves (largest market, huge fan base, better hockey team these days, brighter future). By any measure, the leaves rebuild under Shanahan has been a success thus far, and is well ahead of schedule (weaker Eastern conference plays into this). The Canucks should not be afraid of following a similar path. Those that say "decade of darkness" have nothing to fear, if Benning is a genius, he'd handle a real rebuild well and without the need to rebuild the rebuild (a la what Shanahan or Chiarelli). Imagine having 2-3 Tryamkin's/Lockwood's/Gaudette's per draft...

Imagine if we had a top two pick in either of the last two drafts. McDavid, Eichle, Lain or Matthews.

The Coyotees picked Strome over Marner and Hanifan. There's been some smart decisions by both organizations. It's really hard to knock anything the leaves have done lately. The Boyle and Andersen trades? Great drafting, great signings, etc.

It's a lot better than having your president admit he can't rebuild because it will make your aging stars unhappy. The Oilers and leaves are giving themselves a chance to win. The Canucks are not.

So if the Coyotes selected Marner, who does Genius Shanahan select? Let me guess, the next best player in line from what we know of those prospects now! Marner fell into their lap.

The leaves were actually ripped on a lot for taking Marner. It took guts. That was no slam dunk. It's clear undersized players are underrated and big guys like Strome with questionable skating are the risks.(Doc clearly has the fascination with big guys being the key to winning.

The Oilers have made some good moves. The Talbot trade looks fantastic. They got some luck, but have been better,
The leaves on the other hand have just made one great move after another the past two years. Everything has worked. And why? Because they got the best management group possible before starting the full rebuild. They were very smart. Lou, Babcock, Shanahan, Lemaire, Hunter, Dubas is just a ridiculous group to have in one organization. When you hear them speak and compare it to Linden, you can clearly see the difference.

And the horrific defense you guys have talked about all year is seeing Rielly and Gardiner playing like #1 D's and better than anyone on Washington's blueline.

I don't think any Leaf fans are under any illusions about their chances this year. Tuna is in his glory getting a reaction out of folks. While the Canucks are golfing, the leaves are playing meaningful hockey.

Sadly, with the Canucks being one of the worst teams in hockey, the Docs and Dudes of the world need someone to bully. This thread reeks of Bountiful.

Looking forward to this argument when the Canucks win the draft lottery in the next couple seasons. Then it will be "What a fucking savant, he played the odds and knew that the only missing piece was a franchise centre, so he put us in position to capitalize on the lottery odds. Genius!"

We'd probably be right where we are. Laine didn't make the playoffs in Winnipeg (or Eichel in Buffalo). Matthews isn't the only reason the leaves are in the show. McDavid is a generational player, and even he missed the playoffs last year. The Canucks need much more than a 1/2 overall pick.

Just remember, Shanahan was hired by the leaves one month before Linden/Benning.

Shanahan brought in Babcock, Lou, Kyle Dubas, and Lemaire. He beat out everyone to get these guys to build a terrific management team.
And again, taking Mitch Marner took guts and it has paid off. Nylander was a terrific pick as well at #8 overall.
